Schossler’s Olimpico Leads HPU in Draw at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. — Emma Schossler netted her first goal of the season Saturday as the High Point University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Big South Conference opponent Longwood University.

SITE: Athletics Complex
SCORE: High Point 1, Longwood 1
RECORDS: High Point (4-4-6, 2-1-2), Longwood (3-6-3, 1-1-1)

Head Coach Aaron McGuiness: "Disappointed that we didn't come away with a better result. In the first half, we did well and were unlucky not to score. Late in the second half, we let them get back into the game and need to do better with being organized when defending set pieces."

In the 59th minute, Schossler netted an olimpico goal on the Panthers' set piece and third corner kick of the game. It was the fifth-year defender's eighth career goal and first since 2021 as the captain launched her only shot with her left foot perfectly into the top left corner.

The goal put HPU ahead for 10 minutes before the Lancers matched the goal with one of their own as Peyton Curney scored in the 59th minute.

Each team had chances in the final 25 minutes, but none good enough to give either team the advantage in what was an even game on the stat sheet. The Panthers edged the Lancers in shots by one, 10 to nine, as both had six shots apiece in the second half. HPU had five shots on goal to Longwood's one.

Coming into the game, the keepers — HPU's Ellyn Casto and Longwood's Mary Kate Levush — led the Big South with four shutouts apiece. On Saturday, they each allowed a goal, but secured key saves to keep things knotted,1-1.

Up Next: The Panthers have a week off before welcoming Charleston Southern to Vert Stadium Saturday, Oct. 14 as HPU honors its seniors prior kickoff at 4 p.m.
