HIGH POINT, N.C. — In a mid-week Big South Conference matchup, the High Point University women's soccer team was edged by USC Upstate Wednesday night, 1-0.
SITE: Vert Stadium
SCORE: High Point 0, USC Upstate 1
RECORDS: High Point (4-4-5, 2-1-1), USC Upstate (7-1-4, 4-0-0)
Head Coach Aaron McGuiness: "They are a tough, athletic, and gritty team. They came here and delivered that, and we didn't respond well enough to their physicality. As much as we out-shot them, our shots weren't threatening enough. We need to do better picking up those second, loose balls and generating attacking moments from there."
In the 20th minute, the Spartans scored the game's lone goal via Margret Edda Bjarnadottir, who took a feed from Hailey Sapinoro, and got just enough on it before it trickled into the net.
The score came after
Ellyn Casto, who secured three saves for the Panthers, made a diving save that set up a corner kick. Those two plays were two of four shots on goal for USC Upstate; meanwhile, HPU had the same number of shots on goal out of 18 attempts.
The Panthers held the possession for over half of the game but were unable to get their shots on target and threaten the league-leading Spartans.
Lindsey DeHaven fired off a team-high six shots, while
Fain Buete had four with three on goal.
Emily Mashinski contributed three, while
Skyler Prillaman Shults and
Leah Malone each had two a piece.
Up Next: HPU is back in action Saturday with a trip to Longwood University, beginning at 2 p.m.
