"I thought we played really well," head coach
Ryan Meek commented after the game. "I liked seeing the scores and I thought we played consistent the whole match, maybe a few ups and downs but you're always going to have that. More than anything I thought our floor defense was good and I thought our block was really good, especially after the first set. Just a great team effort."
At one point in all three sets, the Panthers made big strides with big runs. Scrappy defense from
Kea Whillock,
Jordyn Schilling and
Regina Tijerina helped on the Panthers defensive coverage, with Whillock leading the night with 13 digs. HPU held GWU to a .019 hit percentage after a negative hit percentage in the third set at -.036.
High Point picked up seven points with seven service aces as a team but the nine service errors countered it, with four of the errors coming in the second set.
HPU took advantage of the Runnin' Bulldogs' mistakes, especially around the net. Graf and
BayLea Sparks had back-to-back dumps on the net from over passes by GWU in the third set.
High Point will look to prepare for Winthrop as the team welcomes the Eagles to the Millis Center on Saturday afternoon.
"Winthrop is a really good team and I think Gardner-Webb has a really good team," coach Meek added. "I think both teams are very similar, they're outside heavy and they're going to have a middle that can do some stuff. We need to be ready to battle and I think our girls will be."
