Head Coach Zach Haines: "It was a really solid performance. First 25-30 minutes I thought we were outstanding. Asheville did good at 2-nil, they worked hard, started to press us higher. They made it more difficult to have rhythm in the game and keep the ball while still having control. In the second half, they put a lot of numbers forward, asking questions of us. I thought our guys defended well and then we were opportunistic on a couple counter attacks to put the game away. Overall, a great result and great performance. We will take the three points."
High Point dominated the ball early and held possession for nearly the whole first half. Ripping five shots to Asheville's zero.
The scoring party started in the 15th minute as
Tony Pineda crossed it into the box,
Beau Yantz was there to take the volley and send it to the back of the net.
Five minutes later,
Jefferson Amaya played one up off a corner kick which found its way back out to the top of the box.
Seth Antwi met the ball at the top of the key and absolutely lasered it to the top of the net. High Point took an early 2-0 lead.
That brought High Point to the end of the first half. Due to the Panthers unwavering control of the ball during the first half, it sent them into the second with energy, confidence, and momentum.
In the 69th minute, Amaya did not need anyone's help, as he made a stellar olimpico goal. The ball bounced its way past Bulldog defenders and into the back of the net.
The foot was still on the gas for High Point.
Brendan Krueger netted his second of the season as he and
Davis Biggerstaff were playing a little pass and go in the box. Krueger was able to connect with one that got past the reach of the keeper. High Point was now up four with under 10 minutes to play.
Josh Caron had a quiet night in the net, having to make two key saves in the second half. He tallied his fifth shutout on the year.
Up Next: High Point will travel to Charlottesville, N.C. to take on No. 18 ranked Virginia on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
