Head coach
Chelsea Banbury: "We shot the ball well, and I think a lot of that goes back to how we're starting to share the ball pretty well and playing together well as a team, and taking better shots, higher percentage shots. And fortunately we were able to knock them down. It was nice to see everybody be able to get in the game today and actually score. We're moving in the right direction, I'm happy about that, so hopefully we can continue to get better."
High Point opened the game on a 10-0 run, eventually forcing a Winthrop timeout with 6:17 remaining in the first quarter.
Claire Wyatt started the scoring for HPU, knocking down a three-pointer before
Skyler Curran added her first bucket, a jump shot in the paint.
Nakyah Terrell also tallied a made bucket before Curran knocked down a three-pointer on the next possession, forcing the Eagles to take a timeout.
After a made basket from the Eagles,
Jenson Edwards got on the board with a layup before Curran added two more to her game-high seven first-quarter points. After an Edwards made free throw, Curran evaded a Winthrop defender and found Edwards under the basket, who unselfishly made the extra pass to a wide-open
Shakira Baskerville for an easy layup. High Point held an 18-7 lead after the first period, shooting over 46 percent from the floor.
The Panther offense exploded in the next period for 37 points, the second-most in a second quarter in HPU program history, to go along with a program-high in second quarter made field goals (12).
Jenson Edwards and
Anna Häger each hit three-pointers while Baskerville tallied the next seven points with a triple and two layups.
After a Winthrop made basket, Curran and Häger hit from deep on consecutive trips down the floor to push the Panther lead to 37-10 with 4:47 remaining in the period. The Eagles scored the next five, but HPU traded baskets the rest of the half to hold a 49-23 lead at the halftime break. Curran posted five points in the run while Häger added another triple.
High Point opened the second half on an 11-2 run with two three-pointers from Curran and another from Terrell while
Jordan Edwards added a bucket in transition.
Holding a 62-27 lead with six minutes remaining in the period, the Panthers elected to rotate in fresh legs to give their starters more rest. The HPU reserves held the Eagles to just four points the rest of the quarter.
Jordan Edwards started the fourth quarter with five points on a three-pointer and a jumper in the paint while
Teegan Pifher added a made bucket under the basket. In her first game back from a lingering injury,
Courtney Meadows found Baskerville under the hoop for an easy layup.
After grabbing an offensive board, Baskerville got the putback to go to add to her career-high point total. Meadows added her first points of the season with 4:40 to go as the Panthers led 75-36 at the media timeout.
Nevaeh Zavala knocked down a triple out of the break for her first points of the night. With a made free throw from
Amaria McNear, also in her first game back from injury, every Panther scored in the 79-42 rout of the Eagles.
