Panthers Fall to Spiders on Senior Day

Site: Vert Stadium (High Point, N.C)

Score: High Point 5, Richmond 16

Records: High Point (7-6, 2-2), Richmond 8-4 (3-1)

HIGH POINT, N.C— The High Point University men's lacrosse team fell to the Richmond Spiders on Saturday afternoon at Vert Stadium by a score of 16-5. Jack Van Overbeke led the way for the Panthers with one goal and two assists. 

Coach Jon Torpey: "All credit goes to Richmond and its coaching staff. Quite simply, from the beginning to the end, they were the better team in every facet of the game today. I'm looking forward to seeing the way our guys respond to this effort as we move on in our season."

Panther Particulars 

Jack Sawyer put the Panthers on the board first after connecting with Nick Murphy on a man-up opportunity to give HPU a 1-0 lead. 

Joel Scerbo doubled the HPU lead just 50 seconds later to make it a 2-0 lead. 

The Spiders were able to cut the Panther lead to one after a timeout with 8:03 left in the first quarter. Richmond took a 4-2 lead as they scored three goals in a 93-second span.  

Jack Van Overbeke put a stop to the Richmond momentum to cut the Spider lead to one with 4.3 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

Asher Nolting evened the game at four as he powered through two Richmond defenders to find the back of the net. 

Richmond regained the lead with 11:35 left in the second quarter to make it a 5-4 game. The Spiders scored four more consecutive goals to extend their lead to 9-4.  

Michael Ippolito cut the Spider lead to four goals on a man-up opportunity to bring the score to 9-5. 

The Spiders scored seven consecutive goals to close out the game and make it a 16-5 game. 

Up Next

HPU will play their regular-season finale on the road as they travel to Georgia to face Mercer on Saturday (April 30). The first faceoff is set for noon.
