NC State was first on the board, scoring two early runs in the top of the first. The Wolfpack was able to hold HPU to just one hit in the first two innings, until Melton doubled down the left field line in the third. He advanced to third base on
Miggy Echazarreta's ground out to the right side and scored on Sutton's sacrifice fly out.
The Wolfpack added to their lead in the fourth, tacking on two more insurance runs to take the 4-1 lead.
Stuart started a rally in the fourth with a double to left field and then moved to third on a single from
Andrew Amato.
Javon Fields walked to load the bases for
Sam Zayicek, who also walked in a run to put HPU back within two runs. Melton singled to right field and scored both Amato and Fields on the play to tie the ballgame.
With runners at first and second, Sutton singled to center field and Zayicek made the two-base trek to home in time, sliding around a tag, to give the Panthers their first lead, 5-4.
The visitors answered with a vengeance in the sixth, tacking on four runs of their own to take back the 8-5 lead. NC State was able to hold HPU at bay the rest of the night, adding insurance runs in both the seventh and ninth innings.
Up Next: High Point hosts Northeastern for a non-conference weekend series. Friday's first pitch is set for 6 p.m. in Williard Stadium.
