Â
Upstate plated an early run in the bottom of the first inning, but
Teddy Merritt retired four of the next five batters to hold the Spartans to a 1-0 advantage after two innings. With two outs in the bottom of the third, a Spartan RBI-single scored another run and gave the hosts the 2-0 lead.
Â
Â
Merritt recorded his fifth strikeout and
Jackson Melton threw out a runner at home before a ground out ended the Spartan threat in the fifth.
Â
High Point started to chip away in the top of the sixth, as
David Coleman led off with a four-pitch walk and stole his second base of the season before advancing on a ground out.
Peyton Carr knocked a double down the left field line to pick up the RBI and pull HPU back within one run.
Â
Â
Merritt finished his outing in the sixth, getting another strikeout, ground out, and a pop out to hold Upstate to the 2-1 lead.
Â
Â
With two outs in the seventh, the Panthers mounted another rally.
Miggy Echazarreta walked and advanced to second as
Jackson Melton reached base on catcher's interference. Pinch hitter
Justin Ebert singled through the right side and Echazarreta scored easily to even up the game.
Â
Â
Just as quickly as HPU had clawed back into the game, the Panthers saw it slip away as Upstate used a six-run seventh inning to take back a commanding 8-2 lead.
Â
Carr and Fields both singled through the left side in the eighth, but after a Spartan pitching change, Carr was picked off at second to end the inning. Batters went down in order in the ninth to give Upstate the series win.
Â
Up Next: The Panthers finish out the weekend series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Harley Park.
