HIGH POINT, N.C.— The High Point University women's lacrosse team picked up its fourth straight win this time against Longwood 19-7 on Wednesday (April 13th) night in Vert Stadium. Abby Hormes led the way in scoring for the Panthers again with seven goals on the day and one assist for eight points. She now has a total of 355 points and is away 45 points away from becoming the sixth women's college lacrosse player to eclipse 400 points.
The game was HPU Women's Lacrosse's Special Olympics game as the Panthers welcomed Special Olympics athletes to enjoy the pregame festivities with them on Wednesday night.
Coach Lyndsey Boswell: "Longwood is a great team and they have had a great year so far so we were really looking forward to seeing what we could do against them. In the first part of the game, we came out and executed our game plan to go up 8-0. I am just really proud of how we followed the game plan early in the game and then how we followed through with it throughout the game."
Panther Particulars
Hormes struck first for HPU putting the Panthers on the board 1-0. It was another fast start for HPU as the Panthers scored with just 13 seconds gone in the first quarter.
High Point kept the pressure on as Kay Rosselli scored on a free position with 12:52 to play in the first quarter to make it 2-0.
18 seconds later, HPU added on to their lead as Nicole Pugh scored on a feed from Mena Loescher.
Rosselli found the Big South Freshman of the week Mandy Brockamp who scored to make it 4-0.
Hormes exploded to the cage to find the fifth Panther goal of the day to make it 5-0 with 10:25 to go in the first quarter.
Hormes made it two straight scoring again to make it 6-0 with 8:24 left in the first quarter.
Pugh added another with 7:36 left in the first quarter scoring her second of the day adding a seventh goal to the Panther run.
Pia Cavallaro made it eight straight as she scored on a pass from Hormes to make it 8-0.
Longwood scored three straight late in the first quarter to make it 8-3.
Rosselli scored her second of the first quarter on a free position to make it 9-3 with 3:08 left in the first quarter and took a 9-3 lead into the break.
Longwood struck first in the second quarter as the scoring slowed a little to make it 9-4 with 8:30 to play in the second quarter.
Hormes scored her fourth of the day to make it 10-4 with 1:29 left to play in the second quarter and took an 11-4 lead into the break after a Rosselli free position goal.
With less than two minutes gone in the third quarter, HPU scored to push the Panther lead to 12-5.
31 seconds later, Cavallaro made it 13-5.
Hormes and Loescher brought the Panther lead to ten with 11:18 to go in the third quarter.
Cavallaro picked up her third of the day in the third with 6:53 to play which made it 16-5.
Grace Bruce scored her first collegiate goal with 4:11 left in the third quarter to give HPU a 17-5 lead.
Hormes and Brockamp added two more goals in the fourth to give HPU a 19-7 victory over Longwood.
