Panthers Clinch Series with 3-2 Victory Over Eagles

The High Point Panthers picked up their fifth straight win and clinched back-to-back Big South series Saturday night against Winthrop. Teddy Merritt picked up the win on the mound and improved to 3-3 on the season while Everett Vaughan recorded his third save of the week. Adam Stuart recorded two doubles on the night as well.

Site: Williard Stadium (High Point, N.C.)
Score: High Point 3, Winthrop 2
Records: High Point (9-14, 4-1), Winthrop (5-16, 0-2)
W: Teddy Merritt (3-3) S: Everett Vaughan (4) L: Carter Sutton (0-2)

Head coach Joey Hammond: "Great job by our guys. Teddy Merritt took the ball and gave us everything we needed, Parker Dean phenomenal job in relief. And Everett Vaughan, three saves in a week what can you say. He's in the game and in critical situations, and he continues to perform for us. Another series win for us, it's great and we're excited about that. We talk about it a lot too, but we have to turn the page now. Tomorrow is another day, and it's just as important as today in terms of a game. One of the things that we're going to take away today is we didn't particularly play really well at baseball today. You know we you know kind of mismanaged a couple signs, I was in between on some decisions. and I've got to get better in terms of management in games. But all-in-all, it's good to know that you can win a game when you don't play the best brand of baseball, and that's yet another thing that we haven't experienced yet until tonight, and that's a big take away for us."

Panther Particulars
HPU plated the first run in the bottom of the first inning as Stuart doubled to left center and advanced to third on Peyton Carr's single. With Cole Singsank up to bat, Stuart scored on a wild pitch to give HPU the 1-0 advantage.

High Point added two more runs in the bottom of the third as Stuart led off with another double that snuck through the left side. Carr followed up with a two-run homer over the left field fence that put the Panthers up 3-0 after three innings.

Winthrop answered with runs in the fourth and fifth innings on a solo home run and an RBI-ground out.

The pitcher's duel resumed as Merritt, Dean, and Vaughan worked to shut out the Eagles and keep High Point in control to clinch the series. Merritt finished with 5.0 innings pitched and six strikeouts while Dean posted four strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work.

Up Next: HPU will go for the series sweep tomorrow (Sunday, March 27th) afternoon. First pitch is a 1 p.m. at Williard Stadium.
