The High Point University baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision to Gardner-Webb on Friday afternoon in their Big South opening series.
Carter Sheppard took the loss on the mound with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched.
Peyton Carr finished 1-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and three RBI.Â

The Panthers got on the board in the top of the first inning, as
Javon Fields and
Charlie Klingler both drew walks and advanced on a wild pitch.
Peyton Carr's sacrifice fly out to right field scored Fields as HPU took the 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first.

The Runnin' Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the third, plating two runs on three hits before adding another run in the bottom of the fourth to take the 3-1 lead. Two more Gardner-Webb insurance runs were added in the fifth.

HPU would answer back as Klingler reached base with another walk before Carr sent a ball over the fence in opposite field to bring the Panthers back within 5-3.

Gardner-Webb took back control in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run and a bases-loaded, 2-RBI single up the middle.
