Head Coach G.G. Smith: "We are definitely excited about beating our rival Elon. There are a lot of things we have to tighten up with our rebounding, but I am proud of the effort, especially made by Manny in the second half."
Abdoulaye Thiam opened up the scoring with a bang, draining a three within the first minute. Emmanuel Izunabor held down the Phoenix scoring on the other end as he recorded back-to-back blocks followed by a put-back score off a Jaden House drive.Â
Coming out of the first media timeout, Alex Holt finished an and-one to put High Point up 15-10.Â
Â
Jaden House put on a clinic through the lane, euro-stepping to two more Panther points.
Bryson Childress was tenacious all night, recording steals and forcing a number of Elon turnovers from his high-pressure defense.Â
Coach Smith on Childress: "Bryson probably has more steals this year already and deflections than he had the past couple years".Â
A Justin Taylor three ball made it 32-21 with a few minutes remaining in the first half.
A Childress three, Thiam lay, and "Manny" block took the Panthers into the half up by ten.Â
The second half of play started with a hard drive by Jaden House and a floater by Bryant Randleman to extend the lead.Â
Elon quickly responded with a run that put them within six.
Brock Williams was a key player all game long adding 7 points, 2 steals, and 4 rebounds off the bench and getting the Panthers back in their flow when the Phoenix applied pressure.Â
Â
The Qubein center was back on their feet as Randleman lobbed an alley-oop from the three point-line to Zach Austin for the finish.Â
Â
With just about six minutes left in the game, Thiam threaded the needle through three Elon defenders, to score a beautiful assist for a Randleman and-one to seal the win.Â
Ten Panther players recorded points in the scoring column, with Emmanuel Izunabor ending the night on top with 15 points, 9 rebounds, and an assist.Â
