Head coach
Chelsea Banbury: "I thought there was some really bright spots today. The first five minutes of the second quarter we looked really good and we looked really fast and we turned them over defensively. Offensively we showed our speed. I thought there were also a lot of sloppy points today, we have a lot that we need to clean up and do a better job of taking care of the ball on offense. We had way too many turnovers against a team like (UNC Pembroke), and just executing on the offensive and defensive ends, I don't think we did a very good job of things that we've gone over in practice. So we've got to clean some things up before next week."
Panther Particulars
After a season-ending injury in the 2021-22 season,
Skyler Curran was back and better than ever putting the first points on the board for the Panthers. Curran tallied nine points in the first quarter followed by sophomore guard
Nakyah Terrell who added seven of her own.
With four minutes left in the quarter, graduate student
Jordan Edwards made a hard drive through the paint to put HPU up 14-8.
Anna Häger put on a clinic shooting 100% in the first half in her High Point debut. The freshman guard was all over the boards on both ends scoring on back-to-back possessions, one being the first three-point field-goal of her collegiate career.
With time ticking down in the first half, junior
LaImani Simmons and senior
Callie Scheier both scored triples to go into the locker room up 34-15.
Claire Wyatt opened up the second-half scoring for the Panthers tallying her first points on the year.
Jenson Edwards buried two from downtown to maintain the double-digit deficit late in the third.
Minutes later, Scheier stripped it out of UNC Pembroke's hands and assisted Terrell to end the third quarter up 48-29.
Two Simmons' buckets and a Zavala three-pointer grew HPU's lead to 33 and put away the victory.
Terrell ended the night on top with 15 points followed by freshman
Anna Häger who made a statement with 12 points in her first game as a Panther.
Callie Scheier added 7 assists and 4 steals on the defensive end.
