Panthers Notch Win at Presbyterian

Site: Ross E. Templeton Center (Clinton, S.C.)
Score: High Point 57, Presbyterian 47
Records: High Point (7-11, 4-3), Presbyterian (8-10, 3-5)

The High Point University women's basketball team picked up a 10-point victory over Presbyterian in Clinton on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers used a balanced attack to defeat the Blue Hose, with Callie Scheier and Nakyah Terrell leading HPU with 11 points apiece.

Panther Particulars
High Point overcame an early 4-0 deficit with a Scheier triple and a fast break layup from Jenson Edwards on back-to-back possessions early in the first quarter.

After a two-minute scoring drought for both teams, HPU ran the floor as Edwards found Jaden Wrightsell for the easy layup.

Two more Wrightsell layups and a free throw along with a Claire Wyatt triple pushed the Panther lead to eight with 1:26 remaining in the opening frame. Terrell's jumper with 0:49 gave HPU the early double-digit advantage.

Presbyterian battled back in the second quarter, holding the Panthers scoreless for over three minutes of game clock and taking a 24-23 lead with 0:44 remaining. Scheier hit her second triple of the day with four seconds left in the half, helping HPU to a 26-24 lead.

HPU hopped out in the third quarter with a 5-0 run from Wyatt. A Scheier free throw and Cydney Johnson's layup pushed the lead back to 10 points until Presbyterian answered with a layup after being held scoreless for over three minutes.

The Blue Hose fought their way back into a three-point ballgame, but a layup from Jordan Edwards with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter along with a Terrell free throw pushed the lead back to six with 10 minutes to play.

Wyatt made a layup in the first HPY possession of the final frame to extend the Panther lead to eight and Wrightsell went two-for-two at the charity stripe to give the visitors a comfortable 10-point lead.

Presbyterian never got closer than eight points while High Point also extended their advantage as many as 15 with 1:52 remaining.

Up Next: HPU travels to Greensboro on Wednesday, February 2nd to take on North Carolina A&T. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
