Panthers Fall to Lancers, 77-64

Box Score Site: Qubein Center (High Point, N.C.)
Score: High Point 64, Longwood 77
Records: High Point (6-11, 3-3), Longwood (10-10, 7-2)

The High Point University women's basketball team dropped a hard fought contest 77-64 to Longwood on Tuesday night in the Qubein Center. Cydney Johnson and Claire Wyatt led the Panthers in scoring with 15 points a piece on the night. Jensen Edwards brought in 10 rebounds for HPU.

Head coach Chelsea Banbury: "It was a tough one. You can't give up 77 points in a game and expect to win, we had too many breakdowns defensively, taking breaks, and then too many lapses in the mental side of the game. Way too many breakdowns to beat a team as good as Longwood."

Panther Particulars
The back and forth battle between the Panthers and the Lancers started right out of the gate as Claire Wyatt began the game scoring four of the first six points for HPU. Jenson Edwards also contributed a bucket and an assist to help spark the Panther offense early in the game. Edwards also had seven rebounds for the Panthers in the opening 10 minutes of play.

Callie Scheier picks up a key turnover for the Panthers and takes it to the bucket to put HPU within six of the Lancers as time expires in the first quarter.

The Panthers began the second quarter scoring six of the first eight points of the quarter. Wyatt, Scheier, and Cydney Johnson all contributed two point plays.

Courtney Meadows and Cydney Johnson hit back-to-back buckets for the Panthers to bring HPU within one of the Lancers. HPU came out of the media timeout on an 8-0 as Wyatt and Johnson hit back-to-back three pointers, while Nakyah Terrell drove to the basket to find a layup of her own.

The purple and white found themselves trailing at the half by a score of 37-30. Claire Wyatt led the Panthers in first half scoring with nine points, while Cydney Johnson had six. Jensen Edwards had 10 first half rebounds, just two away from tying her career best, 12.

Jordan Edwards started off the second half strong scoring a quick five points in the opening three minutes of the third  quarter. Johnson hit two three point shots in as many attempts to cut the Lancer lead to 51-43.

HPU found themselves on a 9-2 run to close out the third quarter sparked by a Jordan Edwards three pointer. Claire Wyatt nailed her second three pointer of the night to bring her point total to 14 on the night.

Jensen Edwards completes the and-one play with a hard fought lay-up and a converted free throw attempt.

Up Next: The Panthers will travel to Clinton, South Carolina on Saturday (Jan. 29) to face Presbyterian. Tipoff is set for 2 pm.
