Panthers Look to Continue Hot Streak vs. Longwood

The High Point University women's basketball team continues their homestand on Tuesday when they play host to Longwood. The Panthers are 6-10 on the season and 3-2 in the Big South.

Across the Bench

Longwood is 9-10 on the season and 6-2 in Big South play ahead of Tuesday's contest. The Lancers have picked up conference wins over North Carolina A&T, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville (twice), Gardner-Webb, and Winthrop.
 
Kyla McMakin leads the Lancers with 18.3 points per game while Akila Smith has averaged 16.1 points per game. Tra'dayja Smith has passed out 98 assists while Kennedy Calhoun has nabbed 54 steals.
 
Rebecca Tillett is in her fourth season as head coach for Longwood and helped the Lancers to a 12-6 finish in the Big South last season, which set a program record for Big South wins.
 
Last Time vs. Longwood
The Panthers dropped an 85-69 contest in the Millis Center last February. Jordan Edwards and Jenson Edwards both had 15 points in the contest while Callie Scheier chipped in 12 off of four 3-pointers. Both Edwards' also dished out six assists apiece.
 
Panthers vs. Lancers
High Point is 28-11 all-time against Longwood since their first meeting in January 1994. The Panthers have won 19 out of the last 20 contests with the Lancers.
 
Three-Time Freshman of the Week
Nakyah Terrell was named the Big South Freshman of the Week for the third time this season on January 24th after helping HPU to two wins over UNC Asheville and Hampton. Terrell averaged 10.5 points per game last week while tallying five steals and four assists.
 
Terrell also earned the weekly honor on November 15th and November 29th.
 
Winning Numbers
All six of HPU's wins have come from games when the Panthers score 60 or more points. HPU has only lost twice when they manage at least 60 points.

Balanced Threat
HPU's win over Hampton was a true team effort, as seven panthers scored seven or more points in the victory. There were also seven Panthers who played for 20 or more minutes against Hampton.
 
Nakyah Terrell led the way with 13 points while Jaden Wrightsell added 11. Wrightsell was just two rebounds away from recording her second double-double on the year while Jenson Edwards led the team with 12 boards.
 
Fourth Quarter Fun
HPU outscored UNC Asheville 23-15 in the final period on Tuesday to pick up their second Big South win. Jaden Wrightsell netted 13 of her 21 points in the quarter, including a turnaround jumper that tied the game in the final minute and two free throws that gave HPU the lead.
 
The Panthers shot nearly 82 percent from the floor in the period and went 5-for-6 at the free throw line to secure the victory.
 
Edwards Secures 40th Double-Digit Performance
In Tuesday's win at Asheville, Jenson Edwards scored 11 points, making it her 40th career double-digit scoring game in three seasons with the Panthers.
 
Edwards has also posted four career 20+ point scoring games and six career double-double performances.
 
H3U Returns
After starting off the season shooting 27.7 percent from behind the three-point line, HPU hit 17 triples against USC Upstate. Team three-point percentage jumped nearly two full points to 29.5 percent after that performance. Six players recorded three-pointers as the Panthers finished the night shooting 43 percent from the arc.

Callie Scheier recorded a Division I career-best performance at USC Upstate, scoring 23 points with five three-pointers and going 8-for-8 behind the charity stripe.
 
Scheier is fourth in the Big South in 3-point field goals made per game as she's made 27 triples (1.8/game).
 
Doubled Up on Double-Doubles
Jenson Edwards and Jaden Wrightsell each posted double-doubles against King. Edwards led HPU in scoring with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Wrightsell posted 12 rebounds and 15 points. It was the first time two Panthers posted double-doubles in the same game since Feb. 20, 2016.
 
Edwards posted her second double-double of the season (sixth in career) against Gardner-Webb with a balanced 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Dishing It Out
Jordan Edwards has served a team-high 47 assists this season. She ranks tied for 7th in the Big South for assists per game (2.9 apg). Last season, Edwards tallied 142 assists on the season, good for fifth in HPU's single-season records.
 
Hitting the Boards
Jenson Edwards leads HPU in defensive rebounds so far this season. Edwards has pulled down 90 defensive rebounds (5.6 rpg) this season. She pulled down 10 rebounds against King and Gardner-Webb to finish with double-doubles in each game. Edwards ranks fourth in the Big South in defensive rebounds per game. 
 
Terrell Posts First Double-Double
Freshman Nakyah Terrell recorded her first career double-double against Wake Forest on Nov. 24th. She led the team with 21 points and 11 rebounds while also nabbing one steal and one assist.
 
Record Book Watch
Redshirt junior Jenson Edwards finished in the top-five all-time for season field goal percentage in 2020-21. Edwards was 141-279 (.505) from the floor. Edwards was also ninth for free throws made and percentage in a season. She was third in percentage (.882) and ninth in free throws made (90). Jenson's .418 three-point percentage line last season was fourth all-time for HPU as well.
 
Jordan Edwards finished tied for fifth for assists in a season (142) and third in assists per game (5.1). Edwards has dished out 37 assists and nabbed 17 steals through the first 13 games of the season.
 
Banbury is Back
Head coach Chelsea Banbury is entering her third season at the helm. She was named the fifth Division I head coach of High Point University's women's basketball team in June 2019. Banbury has a 38-20 record at High Point through her first two seasons.
 
Panthers Enter as Preseason No. 1
High Point was selected as the preseason No. 1 in the Big South while Skyler Curran and Jenson Edwards both earned Big South Preseason honors. Curran was named Big South Preseason Player of the Year after leading the team in scoring last season (17.7 points/game) while Edwards earned Big South Preseason Second Team recognition. Edwards also garnered the Becky Hammond Mid-Major Player of the Year Award after she posted the fifth-highest scoring average in the Big South with a total of 14.6 points per game.
