The High Point University women's basketball team fell to Campbell by a score of 58-50 on Saturday afternoon in Qubein Arena. Jenson Edwards led the team in scoring with 12 points and added seven rebounds in the contest.
Callie Scheier, Cydney Johnson, Nakyah Terrell, and
Jaden Wrightsell chipped in eight points each.
Head coach Chelsea Banbury: "That was a battle. I thought Campbell came out and really responded. We had a pretty good first quarter, and they responded and kept fighting. We had a few stretches where we went scoreless and weren't converting on the offensive end which really hurt us at the end of the first half."
Panther Particulars
After the Camels opened up the game with a 4-0 run, the Panthers responded immediately with a 9-0 run of their own with points coming from four different Panthers.
The Panthers kept their offensive momentum throughout the first quarter as they closed the quarter on a 10-0 run led by Jaden Wrightsell who had five points.
Jenson Edwards closed out the quarter with a lay-up as time expired.
It was an efficient first quarter for the Panthers as they finished the quarter going 58% from the field. Callie Scheier led HPU in the opening frame with six points.
High Point kept the pressure on Campbell holding them scoreless behind the 3-point arc in the first half. The purple and white entered halftime with a three point lead over the Camels. Three different Panthers enter the break with six points a piece.
Starting off the second half, Campbell outscored HPU 8-5 to tie the game until Cydney Johnson was able to regain the lead for the Panthers on a hard fought lay up.
The Camels continued to gain momentum, using a 10-1 run to take a 45-38 advantage into the final frame.
Both teams struggled to find offensive opportunities in the fourth quarter, with neither team scoring a field goal until the final 6:17. Jenson Edwards cut the Camel lead back to single digits, 50-42, halfway through the fourth quarter with a converted layup before Claire Wyatt found her first two points in the game with a later jumper.
While High Point was able to keep the pressure on Campbell, holding them scoreless behind the 3-point arc, Camel runs in the second and third quarter proved to be too much to overcome for the Panthers.
Up Next: The Panthers will continue Big South play on the road on Tuesday (Jan. 18) as they take on UNC Asheville in Kimmel Arena. Tipoff is set for 6:30 pm.
