HIGH POINT, N.C.—The High Point University women's basketball team fell to Gardner-Webb 64-50 in the first game of Big South Conference play.
Callie Scheier led the Panthers with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals on the day.
Jenson Edwards also added her second double-double of the season as she finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Chelsea Banbury: "I give them (Gardner-Webb) credit, especially 30 (Alasia Smith) and 12 (Jhessyka Williams), they took the attitude of 'you can't stop me' and we didn't stop them. They went at us and they challenged us, and we didn't really step up to the challenge. We had a lot of mistakes down the stretch, not guarding and just fouling instead of guarding and putting them at the free throw line, then we started taking bad shots at the other end of the floor. Runs happen pretty quickly when you decide to do those things and stop getting stops, and we didn't finish very well."
Panther Particulars
The Panthers got on the board first with a triple from Scheier on a dish by
Cydney Johnson to take an early 3-0 lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs responded with a 7-1 run to take a 7-4 lead at the 5:00 minute mark of the 1st quarter. Both teams continued to trade baskets and the Panthers trailed 13-11 at the end of the 1st quarter.
Jordan Edwards added another three for the Panthers in the first quarter.
The Panthers fell behind 19-13 at the 6:39 mark of the second quarter, but responded with an 8-0 run to take a 21-19 lead at the 2:29 mark of the second quarter. The run started with a pair of free throws from
Claire Wyatt, a coast to coast driving layup by Scheier, and culminated with a three from
Jenson Edwards and a free throw by
Nakyah Terrell. The Panthers finished the first half with a 23-21 lead.
Jenson Edwards led the Panthers at the half with 6 points and 6 rebounds.
The Panthers continued their momentum from the first half and scored the first four points of the third quarter on a jumper by Terrell and a layup by
Jenson Edwards to extend their lead to 27-21. The Panthers expanded their lead to 34-24 at the 5:13 mark after two layups by Scheier and
Jordan Edwards, followed by a trifecta from Wyatt to culminate a 7-0 run. However, the Runnin' Bulldogs rallied and finished the third quarter on a 14-3 run to take a 38-37 lead into the fourth quarter.
