The High Point University men's basketball team will stay at home for Thanksgiving this year and will host Chowan at 2:00 PM on Saturday (Nov. 27). HPU has played a very home-friendly schedule to start the inaugural season of the Qubein Center with five out of its first seven games at home.

Across The Bench

Chowan was 6-8 last season. The Hawks are a member of Conference Carolinas, the same conference as HPU's home opener Mount Olive.

Tubby Smith on Chowan: "We will play Chowan, they are a Division II team that will be very competitive. Robby Burke is their coach, his dad and I were very good friends, who was also the coach of Chowan.

Last Time Out

After defeating Howard 73-63 the day before on the first day of the Legend's Classic, HPU lost in overtime 74-66 to Georgia State in the championship game of the Legends Classic hosted in the Qubein Center. The Panthers battled all afternoon with Georgia State and had a shot to take the lead with 24 seconds remaining in the game that would not fall. HPU battled in overtime before losing by eight in an exciting game that was back and forth the entire affair. John-Michael Wright and Jaden House led the Panthers with 17 points each. Zack Austin had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Honoring Bob Burke

Before the game against Chowan HPU will honor friend of Coach Smith's and legendary Chowan Coach Bob Burke. Burke is the third-winningest active coach in North Carolina history behind only Mike Krzyzewski and Jerry Steele. Burke compiled a record of 419-217 during his time at Chowan and led the then-Braves to three National Junior College Tournaments with three Sweet Sixteen appearances, including one Final Four appearance. The team posted twelve consecutive 20-plus win seasons and averaged 25 wins per season during that same span.

Mr. 1000

During the Legend's Classic John-Michael Wright achieved the milestone of 1000 points. The milestone came against Georgia State. JMW currently has 1,010 points after scoring 17 against Georgia State. He is seven points away from entering the HPU top-10 for all-time scoring.

Austin Earns Freshman of the Week

Zack Austin earned Big South Freshman of the Week honor this week after he went for 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 blocks in the win against Howard in the first round of the Legend's Classic. Austin's 7 blocks in a single game are the second-most in program history – only one player (Cruz Daniels in 2008 against Youngstown State) has ever had more in one game. had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the Legend's Classic championship game against Georgia State.

Panther Dunk Counter

HPU has 15 dunks on the season so far. The Panthers combined for five dunks against Howard. Neither side recorded a dunk in the championship game of the Legend's Classic as HPU hosted Georgia State. Georgia State just outlasted HPU in OT.

Non-Conference Play

High Point will play 14 non-conference games in total, nine of them taking place inside the beautiful Qubein Center in its inaugural season and the other five occurring on the road. Four of the Panthers' five opponents on the road are Power-Five teams.
