The High Point University men's basketball team (2-4) heads to Richmond, Ky. to face Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday (Dec. 22) in its last non-conference game of the season. The Panthers are coming off of a 22-point win against William & Mary last Saturday. The 22-point win is the largest margin of victory for HPU since Coach Tubby Smith's first season when High Point defeated Western Carolina 86-59 in 2018. It was the most a High Point team has won by on the road during the Tubby Smith era. Tuesday night's game against the Colonels will be streamed live on ESPN + with tip-off at 7:00 PM.

Matchup History 

  • HPU is 1-5 against Eastern Kentucky since becoming a D-1 program in 1999.
  • Coach Smith is 6-1 against Eastern Kentucky all-time as a head coach.
  • The last time the two met was in the Millis Center in Coach Smith's first season. HPU fell in a heartbreaker 70-69 on Dec. 1st, 2018.
  • This will be High Point's fourth trip in program history to Richmond, Ky to face the Colonels.

Across the Bench

  • The Colonels are 6-2 on the season, the Panthers and Colonels have had one opponent in common in North Florida. EKU defeated UNF 80-67 on Nov. 25. HPU defeated UNF 85-74 on Dec. 5.
  • EKU's matchup against HPU will mark their third game against a Big South team this season. The Colonels have defeated Charleston Southern and USC Upstate this season, winning each game by double digits. 
  • EKU is led by Tre King and newcomer Brandon Knapper. In eight games, King is averaging 16.8 per game. Knapper is a West Virginia transfer who made his debut in EKU's last contest against CU Harrodsburg and scored 25 points. King scored 24 in his last time out.
  • The Colonels are coached by A.W. Hamilton who is in his third season as the head coach of EKU. Hamilton was voted the 2020 Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year.

Panther Notes

Mr. Wright

  • John-Michael Wright is coming off of a 14-point performance (tied for team-high) in the 22-point victory against William & Mary. The sophomore is averaging 20.7 points per game which ranks him 31st in the nation in scoring.

El(MORE) Extraordinary Performances

  • Lydell Elmore continues to put forth impressive performance after impressive performance. Elmore scored 14 points against the Tribe in his last time out and brought in seven rebounds. The graduate student is averaging 12.5 points per game. Elmore has scored in double digits in four straight games.

  • Freshman, Bryson Childress dropped a career-high 12 points against William & Mary off of the bench in the Panther victory. All of Childress' points came from three-point range as his shooting ability was on full display. The freshman also recorded a career-high three assists against the Tribe.

Blooming Flowers

  • Freshman, Ahmil Flowers has scored double digits in his last two games. Flowers nearly had a double-double last time out as he scored ten points and brought in seven rebounds.

Big Win

  • The 22-point victory over William & Mary is the largest margin of victory for HPU since Coach Smith's first season when High Point defeated Western Carolina 86-59. It was the most a High Point team has won by on the road during the Tubby Smith era.

Panther Dunk Counter 

  • Throughout the entire 2019-20 season, the Panthers totaled 24 dunks. After only six games, the Panthers already have 19 jams on this season. Elmore has 11 total after having two on Saturday against William & Mary. Elmore has recorded at least one dunk in the last five games.
