The High Point University women's basketball team (2-9, 0-2 Big South) returns home to open 2020 at the Millis Center against USC Upstate (6-5, 1-1 Big South) on Saturday (Jan. 4) at 2 p.m. It will be the first home game in over a month for the Panthers, with the last coming on Dec. 2 against Davidson.
 
Matchup History
  • This is the fifth meeting between the two schools, with High Point holding a 3-1 edge in the first four.
  • Last year was the first time the teams played as Big South opponents, with HPU taking the game 87-61.
  • The Spartans took the first game of the series back in 1990 but the Purple and White have won the last three to ride a three-game winning streak in the series.
 
Panther Notes
  • High Point lost its final game of 2019 at Winthrop, 69-63.
  • The Panthers took the lead midway through the first quarter and led until the first minute of the fourth when the Eagles scored 13 straight to take the lead.
  • Sophomore Skyler Curran led the team in points and rebounds for the third consecutive game, scoring 19 points and grabbing six rebounds.
  • Senior Camryn Brown had seven assists to lead the team and finished with 10 points, giving her 960 in her career and putting her 40 points away from becoming the 13th Panther in the Division I era to score 1,000 points.
  • High Point broke its single-game three-point field goal attempts record for the fourth time this at Winthrop, taking 46 shots from deep. That tops the previous three records from this year of 40 at Duke in the season-opener, 42 against ETSU in the team's first win of the season, and 45 at UNCG.

Across the Bench
  • USC Upstate is 6-5 on the year and 1-1 in Big South play, beating Charleston Southern and losing to Campbell.
  • Brianna Lewis was named the College Sports Madness Big South Player of the Week on Monday after season-bests of 24 points and five rebounds against CSU.
  • Lewis leads Upstate's offense with a scoring average of 14.5 points per game. Quadijah Moore is second in scoring, averaging 8.1 PPG, and was named the Big South Freshman of the Week for the first week of the season after posting back-to-back double-doubles to start her career.
  • The Spartans are 6-0 at home and 0-5 on the road this year. Their losing streak on the road stretches back almost a full calendar year, losing 12 straight after beating Winthrop on Jan. 10, 2019.
  • Upstate is led by head coach Tammy George, in her 15th season leading the Spartans. She has a 189-243 record at Upstate, the Spartans' all-time leader in coaching victories.
 
Up Next: High Point stays at home Monday night (Jan. 6) to host Radford at 7 p.m. before going back on the road later in the week. The Panthers travel to UNC Asheville on Thursday (Jan. 9) and then head to Charleston Southern on Saturday (Jan. 11) to complete the stretch of four games in eight days to start 2020.
