High Point Wins Big Over USC Upstate 3-0

  • High Point had 3 different players score as they beat USC Upstate 3-0.
  • Carsyn Gold has scored game-winning goals in back to back games for the Panthers. 
  • Talia Klimes and the HPU defense picked up their second straight shutout of the season. Klimes and the defense have now shutout two out of three Big South opponents they have faced. 

 

SPARTANBURG, SC- High Point used a balanced offensive attack to beat Big South Conference opponent USC Upstate 3-0. The Panther's talent and depth was put on full display in their Saturday night win as three different High Point Panthers scored. The Panthers were dominant offensively as they recorded 18 shots in the contest.

From the start of the game the Panthers pushed the pace early and applied significant pressure to the Spartans. The Panthers were outshooting the Spartans 7-1 before they found their first goal of the night. Sophomore Carsyn Gold put High Point on the board first with a goal in the 24th minute. Gold was assisted by Sam Gerhart, this made Gerhart the Panthers' season team leader in assists with 2. Gold is on a serious roll as her goal in the game tonight marked the third straight contest where she has recorded either a goal or an assist. The Upstate defense was tested throughout the beginning of the game as HPU had 5 corner kicks in the first half. High Point's defense would only see one shot in the first half. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

High Point came into the second half looking to create more separation, in the first ten minutes of the second half the Panthers had a shot and two corners. HPU's second goal of the contest came in the 56th minute as sophomore Sam Gerhart would score to give High Point a 2-0 advantage. Gerhart was assisted by Kyle Levesque, giving Levesque two goals and an assist thus far in her senior season.

HPU was not stopped at 2, the Panthers stayed active on offense throughout the contest and their persistence paid off. In the 69th minute Charla Ward scored, she was assisted by freshman Chloe Winn. This gave the High Point a 3-0 lead on the evening. This marked Ward's goal of the season. Winn's assist is the first in her High Point career.

It was another strong performance from the High Point defense. Tonight's game was the second HPU shutout of the year. The clean sheets came in back to back performances for the High Point defense. The defense only allowed 3 shots from the USC Upstate offense. None of the Spartan shots were on goal. HPU also did not allow a single Spartan corner in the game. Senior Goalkeeper picked up her second straight shutout of the season. Both of Klimes' shutouts have come in Big South Conference wins.

5 different Panthers were involved in the goals as all 3 goals were assisted. Three Panthers led High Point in shots they also had at least one shot on goal, the three consisted of Ashlyn Kearney, Sam Gerhart, and Emma Schossler.
