Lonchar and Inman Lead Panthers in Win Over Eagles

  • Two Panthers scored in a 2-0 victory over Winthrop to give HPU their first Big South win of the year.
  • This was the third shutout of the year for Keegan Meyer and the High Point defense.
  • High Point recorded 23 shots as compared to the Eagles' 4 shots.

HIGH POINT, NC- High Point picked up their first Big South victory on Saturday night as they beat Winthrop 2-0. The Panthers shot 23 times, with 10 of their attempts being on goal. The Panthers put together a strong effort in Vert Stadium scoring 2 goals and picked up their third shutout of the season.

"I'm proud of the boys tonight, they were incredible with their effort and mentality." Head coach Zach Haines said. "We challenged them this week coming off the ETSU defeat, we really wanted to make sure we got the mentality piece right, working hard, playing every play for 90 minutes. The goals were great, quality finishes but the thing we are most pleased about as a staff is how hard we worked. We truly did play every play, I felt like we won every initial challenge, every second ball and we just did an excellent job as a team, staying together and working for one another tonight."

The Panthers controlled the pace in the first half, but were unable to score, at the half it was tied at 0. The Panthers kept their first half mentality and were able to find the back of the net. Freshman Jordan Lonchar scored in the 73rd minute to put the Panthers up 1-0. Lonchar was assisted by Alex Abril. Lonchar's goal was his second on the season for High Point. He is now tied at 2 with Siggi Benonysson for the team season-high in goals.

Senior Ryan Inman would add to the Panther lead by scoring just five minutes later. Inman scored in the 78th minute to put the Panthers up by 2. The goal would mark the senior's first goal of the season.

It was a strong performance from the defense as they picked up another shutout and did not allow a single shot on goal throughout the night. The Panthers limited Winthrop to only two shots in each half, and only allowed one Eagle corner kick. The shutout puts Keegan Meyer one shutout shy of tying the High Point record for most career shutouts. Kody Palmer (2011-2015) had 24 in his HPU career, tonight's shutout gave Keegan Meyer the 23rd of his career. It was a complete performance on both sides of the ball in High Point's win in their Big South Opener.
