Panthers Complete Spartan Sweep 3-0

  • High Point swept cross triad rival UNCG Wednesday night in Fleming Gym. The Panthers win was powered by underclassmen. Annie Sullivan and Kaley Rammelsberg had 9 kills each.
  • With this win HPU has won their last three games straight.
 
Greensboro, NC- High Point swept UNCG 3-0 on Wednesday night. The Panthers have won three games straight. It was a true team effort to beat the Spartans in straight sets. HPU's underclassmen were huge contributors to the Panthers road win.  Freshmen Annie Sullivan and Kaley Rammelsberg had 9 kills each, while Megan Kratzer recorded 8. The Panthers maintained control for a majority of the match, High Point only allowed the lead to change once in the entire match.
 
"It was a great team win tonight." Head coach Ryan Meek said. "I thought UNCG presented a lot of problems for us, I thought we handled those. It's really to good see all of our kids pitch in this was not a one woman show. I thought at different times all of our kids played well and contributed."
 
 The Panthers used a strong start to their set to power them to an opening set victory. HPU got off to a great start leading by as many as 5 at one point in the first set. The set went back and forth while UNCG, worked back to make it a 19-18 game. HPU would go on a run to end the set  25-21 and win the first set.
 
The Panthers made a statement in front of a lively Fleming Gym, by winning the second set of the match 25-21. Freshman Lucy Dumford played a big role in the match as she finished with 6 kills. The Panthers led by as many as 7 in the 2nd set. The Spartans would charge back behind strong performances from Maria Esch and Emily Keilen, UNCG would work the score back to 22-18 where HPU would call timeout. Out of the timeout Dumford's kill gave them a commanding 24-20 lead. HPU would win the second set with a score of 25-20.
 
The third set was similar to the rest of the match, as it was very close. Abby Bottomley provided the Panthers with a quality third set start as she was serving during their 5-0 start. Despite a hot start for HPU, UNCG was determined to try to pick up a win. the Spartans were able to make it a one-point game in the 3rd set 24-23. HPU called time out, out of the Time out, Megan Kratzer recorded the kill to clinch the victory for High Point.
 
Gabrille Idelbird provided tremendous energy for the Panthers recording 6 kills, and made clutch plays during crucial moments of the game.
 
"It feels great to pick up some momentum as we head in to conference play." Head coach Ryan Meek said. "Obviously the first three weekends were really tough, and we have another tough one coming this weekend. But, it's kind of good to get some confidence under us and you can tell this match there were points that the last couple of weeks we had helped us pull through, a couple of weeks ago we might have doubted ourselves …but tonight I thought we did great job playing through rough patches."
 
Up Next: High Point heads to Davidson, NC for the 2019 Davidson Tournament. The Panthers will face Wofford on Friday at 4. On Saturday the Panthers will play Jacksonville and Davidson.
