Siggi Sends Panthers Past Terriers 1-0

  • Senior Siggi Benonysson put the Panthers on the board first with a goal in the 14th minute. Benonysson's goal ended up being the difference-maker. High Point beat Wofford 1-0.
  • Redshirt senior Keegan Meyer recorded his second shutout of the year, Meyer had 2 saves in the contest. The High Point defense only allowed 3 shots on goals from Wofford.

High Point, NC- High Point controlled the pace early and were able to strike first thanks to a Siggi Benonysson goal in the 14th minute. Benonysson's goal decided the game, his goal also made him the team leader in goals this season with 2. Keegan Meyer recorded his 2nd shut out of the season. It was a big night for the High Point Panther defense as they limited Wofford to only 3 shots on goal.  
 

"We played really well in the first half, we came out with some intensity, we came out with some competitive fire. "Head coach Zach Haines said. "I felt that we were able to impose ourselves in the game with and without the ball. I thought we did a nice job creating quality chances and we were able to disrupt their rhythm."
 

The Panthers dictated the pace early in the first half rattling off 2 shots in the first ten minutes. Siggi's goal would come in the 14th minute to put High Point up 1-0. HPU had 10 shots in the first half, the Panthers applied tremendous offensive pressure to Wofford with 3 corner kicks in the first half. High Point started out with a very quick pace and it ultimately paid off for the Panthers.
 

Wofford came out of the break determined to find an equalizer. It was a great effort from the Terriers in the second half as they had 7 shots as compared to 4 in the first. Wofford also took 4 corners in the second half. Wofford applied offensive pressure but the High Point defense was prepared for the challenge and made stop after stop to complete the game with a shutout. One of the defensive highlights came in the 71st minute when freshman Karson Kendall stepped in front of a Wofford shot right in front of the goal and blocked it to keep the shutout in-tact.  


"We've been able to steadily improve in a lot of areas in these six games," Haines said. "That's the name of the game for us, continuing to get better and better. We put a challenging slate out there for them, with the idea that we are focused on building towards being the best team we can possibly be, come conference play and tournament time and we feel like we are headed in the right direction."    
 

Benonysson led High Point in shots with 3, senior Jonathan Bolanos ended the day with 2 shots both of which were on goal.
 

Up Next: HPU comes into their last non-conference game-winning 2 out of their last 3. High Point hosts East Tennessee State University in Vert Stadium on Saturday at 7 pm to conclude non-conference play.
