Box Score OMAHA, NEBRASKA – The High Point University volleyball team finished their mid-Western road trip in Omaha with a huge five-set match win against the Mavericks.
The Panthers (4-7) began set one with a back-and-forth battle going point for point with the Mavericks. Freshman Annie Sullivan and Sophomore Gabrielle Idlebird opened up the set with a kill apiece. The Mavericks pulled ahead with a few runs of their own. The Panthers kept battling back with the help of Freshman Annie Sullivan collecting a total of 9 kills. Unfortunately the Purple & White were unable to snag set one as Omaha defeated the Panthers 25-22.
In set two, the Mavericks kept the Panthers on their toes taking the lead 5-3 and then Coach Ryan Meek called a timeout. After the timeout, the Panthers got in the zone. With multiple kills from Ildebird, Sullivan, and Freshman Megan Krazter and Freshman Maggie Salley, the Panthers had their first lead of the match. Omaha battled back with a 9-0 run to make it 19-17. The Panthers Sullivan helped tied up the match with two big kills.
The Panthers started off set three well taking a 4-1 lead against Omaha. Freshman Kaley Rammelsberg and Sophomore Gabrielle Idlebird made their presence known combining for six kills to help the Panthers pull away. The Mavericks battled back; however, with the help from Kratzer the Panthers pulled off a big win in set 3.
Set 4 started off the same as the Panthers and Mavericks went back-and-forth. Kratzer started strong with two kills to swing the momentum toward High Point. With a few service and attack errors, the Mavericks gave the Panthers a lead as high as four points. Omaha did not let up on the Panther and came back within two. High Point capitalized with a few kills and blocks to take set four, 25-21.
In the be all to end all set 5, the Panthers and Mavericks did not disappoint with a well-fought battle. Point for point the two teams went after each other until the Panthers went on a 3-0 run. Freshman Megan Kratzer and Kaley Rammelsberg led the Panthers each with three kills to help High Point pull off a win in set 5, 15-11.
"We talk all the time about being tough minded. Today we had a chance to show our resilience being down 2-0. We were able to battle back on a very good team's home floor and get a win in a tough situation, said Coach
Ryan Meek." Almost our entire roster contributed today and that was great to achieve a true team win. We look forward to getting back on the court Wednesday against a very talented UNC Greensboro team."
The Purple & White are back in action Wednesday, September 18 as they take a small road trip to take on the Spartans of UNC-Greensboro at 7 p.m.
