Panthers Play Tough in Lincoln

  • High Point played hard against #2 Nebraska, the Panthers took the 5-time national champions to the limit in the second set 25-22. The Huskers would pick up the win 3-0.
  • The Panthers returned to the floor to face Loyola Marymount, the Panthers showed a lot of heart taking the 3rd set past 25. The Lions sealed a 3-0 win with a 26-24 3 set victory.
 
LINCOLN, NEBRASKA- High Point played hard in front of a crowd of 8,000 in the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Nebraska during day one of the Ameritas Players Challenge. The first contest of the day for the Panthers was against the #2 Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Huskers were runners up in the NCAA National Championship last year and have their sights on returning to that stage. The Panthers came out strong in the first set. Freshman Kaley Rammelsberg had a big first set, she recorded 3 kills and a block. HPU kept it close but halfway through the first set, the Huskers would pull away and win the first set 25-16.
 
The Panthers used the first set as inspiration and came out for the second set inspired and on a mission. HPU kept up with the Huskers for the entire 2nd set, Nebraska was never able to create separation. The Husker lead never grew larger than three. Freshmen Rammelsberg, Annie Sullivan, and Maggie Salley stepped up in huge moments and made clutch plays to keep the Panthers in the set. Late in the second set Nebraska took a 21-18 lead but High Point didn't let them pull away. HPU worked their way back to make it a one-point difference. Junior Abby Bottomley recorded a service ace that would tie the game at 21. The Huskers would go on a 4-1 run to end the set and head into the break with a 2-0 lead in the match. Freshman Maggie Salley and Kaley Rammelsberg led the way for HPU with 6 kills each. Salley also added 3 service aces.
 
The Huskers came out of the break firing on all cylinders and did not look back in the third set. Nebraska would pick up the third set by the score of 25-8 to complete the 3-0 set.
 
High Point returned to the Devaney Center later that evening to challenge the Loyola Marymount Lions. LMU opened the first set by jumping out to a big lead that would end up being big enough for the Lions to win the first set by ten 25-15. The second set was closer at the start, it went back and forth for the first 15 points. Once the Lions got it to a 13-10 lead they were able to pull away and win the second set.
 
The Panthers came out of the break ready to respond. The third set was tight and went back forth. Megan Kratzer had 3 big kills in the set that kept the Panthers close. Sopheea Mink and Gabreille Idle Bird each had 2 kills for the Panthers in the third set. Kratzer had a kill that would tie the game at 23, a service error that would give HPU a 24-23 lead in the third set. The Lions would rattle off two kills and a service ace to win the set 26-24, and sweep the match 3-0. Annie Sullivan led the way for the Panthers with 11 kills in the match and 3 blocks.
