Panthers Split Friday Doubleheader After Loss To TCU

August 30, 2019

Box Score FORT WORTH, Texas - After sweeping Lipscomb earlier in the day, High Point University volleyball took its first loss of 2019, after falling to hosts Texas Christian in this weekend's Cowtown Classic. The Horned Frogs took the evening contest three sets to nothing, despite trailing the Panthers in the opening two frames, while preseason All-Big South hitter Madison Smith tied for a match-high with 10 kills.

HPU got out to a 6-3 lead in set one before the home squad went on an 11-4 run to move back out in front. The Panthers managed to tie things at 21 apiece at the tail end of the period however, thanks in part to a trio of kills from freshman Sopheea Mink. The Horned Frogs closed out the stanza with a 4-1 run however, to win the set 25-22 and claim a 1-0 set-lead in the match.

Set two nearly required extra points, with the two sides changing ownership of the lead on four separate occasions. With a 25-23 final, HPU hitters Annie Sullivan and Madison Smith combined for nine kills in the middle set, leading by as many as three before allowing their opponents to go up by two sets.

TCU took the early lead in the final period, staying in front for the entirety of the set. Kaley Rammelsburg secured a block and a kill in the third, but was unable to keep the Horned Frogs from grabbing the 25-14 win.

Despite posting six blocks to the Horned Frogs' two, HPU was unable to grab a set win over hosting Texas Christian. The Horned Frogs outhit the Panthers .222 to .160, while recording 11 service aces on the afternoon.
