SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The High Point University men's basketball team fell to Wofford 89-61 on Saturday night (Nov 9). The Panthers had a strong start to the first half and led by as many as 11 but the Terriers were able to claw their way back into the contest. Curtis Holland was the leading scorer for the purple and white with 14 points.
"It was disappointing we didn't guard the three-point shot, I thought we got some good play from Curtis (Holland) and Rob (Peterson), but we did not shoot as well as we can," head coach Tubby Smith said. "We shot 40 percent from three-point range, so we did not shoot poorly, but we just needed to shoot more and limit their threes especially when you play a team that can shoot like they can. It looks bad because it's a 28-point loss, but they were home celebrating their championship. We got off to a great start. It was a tale of two halves and we actually came out and made the first basket at the start of the second half, but then they started draining a bunch of threes and we need to get back and get better at that."
High Point got off to a great start to begin the game. The action between the Terriers and Panthers went back and forth until the scoring picked up for High Point as HPU went on an 11-3 run to put themselves up 23-12.
Curtis Holland played a key role in starting the run for the Panthers highlighted by a three-point play that put HPU up by 9. Eric Coleman Jr gave the Panthers their largest lead as he hit a three-pointer to put the purple and white up by 11.
Wofford would go on a run in the last 5 minutes of the first half as the talented perimeter shooting team hit a string of three-pointers. The Terriers would take a 32-26 lead into the break. Holland was the leading scorer for High Point in the first half with seven points. John-Michael Wright finished the half right behind him with six points of his own.
Wofford opened up the second half by going on a 17-3 run which created enough space for the Terriers to secure the victory down the stretch.
Rob Peterson III had a big second half scoring eight points, ending the night in double digits with eleven. Cliff Thomas Jr. put together a solid effort as he brought in six boards, scored four points, and had a big block. John-Michael Wright was the leading scorer amongst freshman scoring 11.
