The High Point University men's basketball team (0-2) travels to New England to take on ACC foe Boston College (2-0) on Wednesday (Nov. 13) evening as part of the annual Gotham Classic.

The Gotham Classic, run by the Gazelle Group, is an 'multi-team exempt' college basketball event (or MTE), allowing all four contests to count as just one toward the cap of 31 scheduled games. This marks the first time HPU has appeared in the Gotham Classic, and are joined by Eastern Washington, Belmont, Boston College and Saint Louis. BC and Saint Louis will play in the Gotham Classic Showcase game at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, Nov. 27.

  • The matchup will be the first between HPU and Boston College.
  • This is the first time head coach Tubby Smith will face the Eagles in his 28 seasons as an NCAA DI skipper, while having an overall record 32-22 against ACC foes.

Panther Notes
  • HPU is coming off an 89-61 setback at Wofford this past Saturday. The Panthers led by as many as 11 in the first half, and were led in scoring by sophomore Curtis Holland III, who had 14 points. High Point shot 40% (6-15) beyond the arc, led by freshman John-Michael Wright, who went 3-4 from downtown.
  • The Panthers kicked off the 2019-20 campaign last Tuesday (Nov. 5) in the final home opener at Mills Center, falling to William & Mary, 70-56. John-Michael Wright led all Panthers in scoring with 17 points, while chipping in with five boards.
  • John-Michael Wright was named Big South Freshman of the Week after scoring a team-leading 17 points against William & Mary on High Point's opening night. Wright also brought in five rebounds and added an assist and a block against the Tribe. At Wofford, Wright scored 11 points, while shooting a game-high 75% from three-point range as he went 3-4 on the evening.

Across the Bench
  • Boston College heads into the contest with a 2-0 record, earning victories against Wake Forest (77-70) and at USF (74-60).
  • The Eagles have been led by Derryck Thornton, who is averaging 22.5 points. Thornton is a graduate transfer who began his collegiate career at Duke before transferring to USC for two seasons. Thornton had 23 points in the Wake Forest win and 22 in the victory at USF.
  • BC went 14-17 (5-13 ACC) last season and were eliminated in the first round of the ACC Tournament by No. 14-ranked Pittsburgh. They earned three win against eventual NCAA Tournament teams (Florida State, Louisville and Minnesota).
  • Boston College is led by Jim Christian, who enters his sixth season at the helm of the Eagles after being appointed in April of 2014.
