WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The High Point University baseball team fell in its series finale at William & Mary, 13-2, on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

William & Mary (3-9), which took the series with the victory, jumped out on top with an unearned run in the first inning and an RBI single in the second inning to lead, 2-0.

Senior Andrew Gottfried battled back from the rough start to strike out three in a row with the bases loaded to limit the Tribe in the second inning. The stretch gave Gottfried (0-2) momentum as he retired 10 in a row from the second to the fifth. He ended up matching his career high with eight strikeouts in just 4.1 innings.

HPU (5-6) tied the game in the top of the fifth thanks to defensive miscues from W&M. Senior Hunter Lee laced a two-out RBI triple to right-center to plate senior Jordan Sergent. Lee would then score on a throwing error to even the score, 2-2.

William & Mary immediately retook the lead for good in the home half of the fifth with a sacrifice fly and a two-out, two-run single to move ahead 5-2. The Tribe added five runs in the seventh and three more in the eight to put the game away.

Redshirt-junior Daniel Milwee recorded a pair of hits to complete a 4-for-10 weekend. Lee finished 1-for-3 with his first triple of the year, a run scored, and an RBI.

The Panthers return home for a single mid-week contest on Tuesday against Charlotte. First pitch at Williard Stadium is scheduled for 4 p.m.
