NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C.—Despite a career-high 24 points from freshman Denny Slay, the High Point University men's basketball team fell on the road at Charleston Southern, 83-74, Thursday night (Feb. 1) at the Buc Dome.
 
The Panthers (10-12, 5-6 Big South) outshot the Bucs (9-13, 4-7 Big South), 53.1 percent to 52.8 percent, but High Point had 15 turnovers to CSU's 10. HPU had 26 rebounds to the Bucs' 24.
 
"We shot the ball really well, but we have to be better defensively," HPU head coach Scott Cherry said. "In the second half, we had some opportunities where we couldn't capitalize on their misses. Overall, we have to get back to work, try to get better and get ready for a big home game on Saturday."
 
Slay matched his career high in the first half with 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers and then doubled his tally in the second, ending with 24 points and four 3-pointers. He had seven 3-point field goals coming into the contest.
 
Junior Andre Fox added 15 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Brandonn Kamga recorded 12 points along with a career-high seven assists.
 
Charleston Southern led 55-45 with 11:12 left, but the Panthers went on a quick 7-0 run capped by a 3-pointer by sophomore Jahaad Proctor, but that was as close as the Panthers would get.
 
In the first half, the Bucs took advantage of seven Panther turnovers and shot 51.7 percent from the field (15-29), while the Panthers were 11-22 (50.0 percent) from the field, but did not score a field goal the final 5:15 of the frame.

With two 3-pointers, Fox moved into ninth all-time at HPU with 103 career 3-point field goals, passing Scotty Hall, who had 102 from 1997-99.
 
Next up, the Panthers host Campbell in a key Big South game on Saturday (Feb. 3). Tip-off at the Millis Center is set for 7 p.m.
