HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women's basketball team started hot and led at the break, but couldn't hold on as Campbell came away with a 69-53 victory in the Millis Center on Saturday.
The Panthers (11-14, 9-5) shot 55 percent in the first half against the Camels' (19-6, 12-3) nation-leading defense to lead 31-30 at the break. However, the visitor's defense clamped down in the second half holding HPU to 22.2 percent while piling up a plus-17 rebounding margin in the win.
The setback is High Point's first since falling at Campbell on Jan. 24 seven games ago.
"I'm disappointed in our team's effort today" head coach
DeUnna Hendrix said. "It's something that I thought we had overcome lately, but when you look at the rebounding it is clear that we got outworked. I thought they could penetrate on us any time that they wanted to because I don't think we put forward the defensive effort that we needed."
Sophomore
Lindsey Edwards provided 15 points and six rebounds while knocking down 6-of-11 field goal attempts off the bench. Similarly, junior
Kat Harris shot 5-o-f-11 en route to a 15-point performance.
Overall, the Purple & White shot 21-of-54 (39 percent) while Campbell racked up 22 makes on 52 attempts (42 percent).
The difference in the game came on the glass. The Camels dominated the boards pulling down 40 rebounds – including 15 offensive boards. Even though Campbell only registered seven second-chance points, the offensive rebounds forced the Panthers to defend long possessions, which Hendrix said led to HPU's shooting struggles after halftime.
Similarly, the Camels were able to earn 19 trips to the line making 16 of their attempts. Meanwhile, the Panthers were perfect from the line, but only earn nine tries.
In 27 minutes, sophomore
Emma Bockrath tallied nine points and three rebounds. HPU's other starting guard, senior
Kaylah Keys, added six points and three assists.
In the first quarter, Harris and Edwards kick started the Panther offense with two buckets apiece as HPU built a one-point margin, 17-16.
The Purple & White stayed hot in the second quarter as Bockrath and Keys hit back-to-back buckets to make it 19-14 with 8:20 left in the second period. However, Campbell battled back to regain the lead, 28-27, with 2:30 to go in the half.
Edwards and freshman
Camryn Brown answered, though, as each scored down the stretch to give High Point a 31-30 edge at halftime.
Out of the break, the teams traded baskets before Edwards and Harris converted back-to-back three-point plays to give HPU a five-point advantage, 39-34, 5:00.
But the Campbell defense locked down High Point the rest of the quarter going on a 14-2 run with the Panthers' only points being free throws from freshman
Carol-Anne Obusek.
From there, the visitors entered the final frame with a 48-41 lead before outscoring the Purple & White 21-12 in the quarter to close out the 68-53 win.
The Panthers are on the road for both contests next week playing at Charleston Southern on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and at Presbyterian on Saturday at 2 p.m.
