Â
HIGH POINT, N.C. – After finishing the first half tied, the High Point University men's lacrosse team went on a 7-0 second-half run en route to its first win of the year in a 9-3 victory over Georgetown in Vert Stadium on Tuesday.
Â
The Panthers (1-1) were led by their sophomore goalie
Tim Troutner Jr. who recorded 14 saves, four caused turnovers and three ground balls on the day. Behind Troutner and a stout defensive effort, HPU held the Hoyas (0-1) scoreless through the first 29:51 of the second half while the offense piled up seven unanswered goals to create the winning margin.
Â
"It's always great to get the first win of the year," head coach
Jon Torpey said. "I thought our guys played hard, especially in the second half, after we challenged them to come out with more of a sense of urgency. We played with great poise in the second half. We're young and we're still trying to find out who our guys are this season and we got a little more clarity today and I'm excited to see us continue to grow and get better every day."
Â
Offensively, senior
Dallas Bridle led the way by equaling his career high with three points (2g, 1a). Similarly, senior
Michael LeClair posted two goals to extend his scoring streak to 43 games – the second-longest active streak in the nation.
Â
Despite allowing 36 shot attempts, the HPU defense was solid all afternoon, which allowed Troutner to face shots he could handle. On that end, junior
Terrell Sands posted a team-high six ground balls and, like seniors
Tanner Landstra and Dan McKenna Jr., caused one Georgetown turnover.
Â
Including Bridle and LeClair, five different Panthers recorded multi-point outings. Senior
Nick Basile and junior
Chris Young both notched their first career multi-goal games while junior
Jason Ashwood posted a goal and an assist.
Â
Rounding out the scoring, senior
Sean Harrison and junior
T Moyer dished out assists while freshman
Ben Baker's first career point came with an assist in the third quarter.
Â
At the face-off 'X' freshman
Davis Sampere racked up five wins and six ground balls. Meanwhile, freshman
Nate Carter tallied three ground balls as the Hoyas posted a +3 edge on the ground (27-24).
Â
Basile opened the scoring with a rocket from 10 yards out off an assist from Moyer to give HPU a 1-0 lead at the 8:36 mark. Three minutes later, Bridle powered his way in front of the crease to up the Purple & White's edge to 2-0.
Â
However, the Panthers were held scoreless the rest of the half as the Hoyas posted goals with 2:18 left in the first and 3:59 in the second to even the score at break.
Â
But after the half the High Point offense broke out in a huge way. LeClair sandwiched goals around Basile's second goal to give HPU a 7-2 advantage just six minutes into the third.
Â
The Panthers weren't finished yet as Ashwood added a man-up goal and Bridle netted his second of the game to send the game to the fourth with HPU leading 7-2.
Â
Young took it from there wrapping up HPU's scoring with two goals in a 21-second span early in the fourth. First, the junior finished in front of the cage off a beautiful feed from Harrison. Then, after the Hoyas won the ensuing face-off, Young stole the ball and raced in to score on an empty net to make it 9-2 with 13:39 to play.
Â
From there, the HPU offense slowed before Georgetown broke its 33-minute scoreless streak with 0:09 on the clock in High Point's 9-3 victory.
Â
The Panthers are on the road on Saturday to take on Maryland at 1 p.m. in College Park, Md.
