HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team clinched a series win over Radford with a 9-5 victory on Saturday evening at Williard Stadium. The Panthers got home runs from sophomores Spencer Brown and Carson Jackson in the win.

"This was another real solid win for us tonight," head coach Craig Cozart said. "I love the fact that we played errorless baseball again and the way we were able to put nine runs up in the fourth and fifth innings after going down speaks to the character of this team. Carson Jackson had a huge day at the plate, Andre Scrubb kept us in the game on the mound and Tyler Britton slammed the door. We are in position to sweep and I hope we take advantage of that tomorrow."

Junior Andre Scrubb earned the win on the mound for HPU and improved to 7-4 for the season. Scrubb allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits and five walks and struck out seven in five innings. Senior Tyler Britton relieved Scrubb and allowed just one run on two hits while striking out three in the final four innings to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Mitchell MacKeith dropped to 3-5 after taking the loss for Radford. The left-hander allowed five earned runs on six hits and a walk in 3-1/3 innings while striking out just one. MacKeith held HPU to just one hit and one walk in the first three innings before giving up five hits and five runs in the fourth.

High Point improves to 28-17 overall with the win and move into sole possession of second place in the Big South with an 11-6 record in conference play. Radford drops to 14-32 overall and 6-11 in the Big South with the loss.

It was the Highlanders that jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring once in the second and twice in the third. Radford got on the board with a solo home run by Shane Johnsonbaugh into the heckle deck in the second inning. RU then took advantage of three Scrubb walks in the third, scoring on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.

High Point scored five times in the fourth inning to come back and take a 5-3 lead. Jackson drove in junior Chris Clare with an RBI single for the first HPU run of the contest then came around to score on an RBI double by redshirt-sophomore Zach Vandergrift. Brown followed Vandergrift and hit a three-run home run to left, his second of the season, putting High Point in front.

After Radford got a run back in the top of the fifth on a passed ball, the Panthers came right back with four runs in the bottom of the frame to extend their lead to 9-5. The first four HPU batters of the inning all got hits as redshirt-junior Tim Mansfield led off with an infield single and Clare followed with a double down the line in left. Senior Dominic Fazio drove in Mansfield for the first run with an RBI single then Jackson hit his fifth home run of the season to score three.

Radford added one final run in the eighth on a wild pitch to bring the final score to 9-5.

The middle of the order produced for the Panthers in the win as Clare, Fazio and Jackson combined to go 6-12 with five RBI and five runs scored. Jackson finished with four RBI and two runs scored, Fazio drove in one and scored once and Clare scored twice. Brown joined the trio with multiple hits of his own, finishing 2-3 with three RBI and a run scored.

High Point and Radford wrap up their weekend series at Williard Stadium on Sunday, May 7, at 1 p.m. The Panthers are going for their third weekend sweep of the season having previously swept Rider at home and UNC Asheville on the road.
