DAVIDSON, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team fell in extra innings by a score of 6-5 at Davidson on Wednesday night in Davidson, N.C. Sophomore
Carson Jackson had three hits in the contest, including his fourth home run of the season.
"The tendency in a game like this is to focus on the final inning, but that doesn't tell the whole story," head coach
Craig Cozart said. "Our inability to create separation by executing in offensive situations was what kept the game close at the end. We were terrible in offensive situations tonight. We kept them in the game long enough and on the road they get the last at-bat. This is disappointing but has no bearing on what is going on this weekend so we need to turn our focus to Radford."
High Point took the first lead in extra innings, scoring once in the top of the 10th to go ahead, 5-4. Redshirt-junior
Tim Mansfield led off the frame with a single and came around to score on an error by the Davidson shortstop.
The Wildcats tied the game back up at 5-5 in the bottom of the inning on errors by freshman
Andrew Gottfried and junior
Josh Greene. Gottfried tried to get the lead runner on a sacrifice bunt, but his throw went into center field. Greene then sent his throw to third into the HPU dugout, allowing the tying run to score and the go-ahead run to move to third. Brian Fortier then singled back up the middle to drive in the winning run.
Gottfried took the loss for the Panthers and dropped to 4-4 on the season. The right-hander got the final out in the ninth before allowing two unearned runs in the 10th to take the loss.
Westin Whitmire got the win for Davidson and improved to 1-1 after allowing one unearned run on three hits and a walk in 2-2/3 innings of work.
High Point drops to 26-17 with the loss while Davidson moves back over .500 at 23-22. The loss was HPU's first in extra innings this season while the Wildcats improved to 3-0 in extra-inning affairs.
Jackson got the Panthers on the board with his team-high fourth home run of the season in the second inning. High Point then added a second run in the frame on an RBI single by sophomore
Spencer Brown.
After Davidson tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run double by Max Bazin in the fifth, High Point came right back with a run in the top of the sixth to go back ahead, 3-2. Junior
Drew Fopeano singled to leadoff the inning and came around to score on Brown's second RBI single of the contest.
Davidson took its first lead of the contest with a two-run single by Sam Foy in the seventh but once again the Panthers came right back in the next half inning, tying the game at 4-4 on an RBI single by sophomore
Hunter Lee.
HPU outhit Davidson by a 16-8 margin but left 14 on base in the contest. Lee and junior
Chris Clare both joined Jackson with three hits on the night while both Brown and Fopeano finished with two hits. Parker went 1-3 with a walk and scored twice for the Panthers.
High Point returns to Williard Stadium for the first time in almost three weeks to take on Radford in a three-game Big South series beginning on Friday, May 6. The series opener will start at 7 p.m., and be broadcast on ESPN3.
