HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women's basketball team will host Stetson on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Millis Center.
Â
The Panthers (1-5) fought back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get over the hump in a 63-60 setback against Norfolk State on Wednesday. In the comeback attempt, senior
Kaylah Keys tallied 16 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter while sophomore
Taylor McGlashan posted career highs in points (10) and rebounds (seven) in the defeat.
Â
Keys is Climbing
• Senior
Kaylah Keys is 29 points from tying Shamia Brown for HPU's Division I scoring record. She also is within striking distance of breaking the D-I record for three-pointers and free throws made.
Â
• The guard ranks 18th in scoring in Big South history and needs 30 points to move past Shamia Brown of High Point and into 17th. Likewise, she needs two three-pointers to move into the top-10 on the league's three-pointers made list.
Â
Sharp-Shooting Panthers
HPU is in the top-4 in the Big South and rank in the top-140 nationally in all three main shooting categories:
           • Field Goal Percentage: .407 (4th/138th)
           • Three-Point Percentage: .343 (1st/89th)
           • Free Throw Percentage: .704 (1st/119th)
Â
Reserve Impact
Through five games, HPU's bench had registered 38 percent of the scoring (147-384) and 44 percent of the rebounds (101-232), but combined for just eight points and 10 rebounds against Norfolk State.
Â
Scouting Stetson
The Hatters return all five starts including Preseason Atlantic Sun Player of the Year Brianti Saunders from a squad that won 20 games last season. Saunders has lived up to the hype so far this season leading the team with 16.8 points and 2.8 assists per outing. Meanwhile, fellow senior Breana Brey is chipping in with 14.1 points per night while hitting nearly 54 percent of her shot attempts this season. Meanwhile, Stetson is the 12th-best free-throw shooting team in the country at 79.7 percent.
Â
All-Time Series with the Hatter
HPU has never played Stetson prior to Saturday's contest.
Â
Against the Atlantic Sun Conference
The Panthers are 5-3 all-time against the Atlantic Sun. The most recent matchup came in a 75-69 win over USC Upstate on Nov. 13, 2013.
Â
Double-Header
After the women's basketball team takes on Stetson, the High Point University men's basketball team will host Drexel at 7 p.m.
Â
Next up
The Purple & White are back on the road on Wednesday when they travel to take on Davidson at 7 p.m. in John M. Belk Arena.
