Editor's note: "20 Questions" is a regular series that will feature a High Point University cross country senior throughout the fall season.
Vinny Todaro is saving his best for last during a strong senior cross country season. A 2015 All-Big South selection, the Newville, Pa., product has posted top-5 finishes in three of HPU's first four races this season and served as the Panthers No. 1 runner in three of four events. He will look to lead the Panthers at the upcoming Big South Championship Oct. 28 in Asheville, N.C.
High Point University
1) Why did you choose High Point University?
"I really fell in love with the team, and with Coach Esposito as well. I really liked the way everybody seemed to get along and work together, and it was my favorite team atmosphere out of all of the schools that I visited."
Â
2) What's your favorite place on campus?
"Probably the Cafe [laughs]. At least that's where I spend most of my time. It's probably not the best place on campus, but I've definitely spent most of my time there."
Â
3) What are your plans after graduation?
"I plan on going to PA school. So, I'll take a year off and probably EMT to get my direct patient care hours and then apply to some programs."
Â
Cross Country
4) What are some of your best memories from your track/cross country career at HPU?
"Definitely just hanging out with the team. Whether it be at practice just making fun of each other, or being on the road making fun of Espo's driving [laughs]. Just having fun with the guys."
Â
5) What's on your warm-up mix?
"For the rare occasion that I'm warming up by myself, ever since high school I've always had Eminem, for some reason. A lot of the time I just prefer to joke around with the guys and keep it similar to practice since that's what we're used to doing."
Â
6) What's your favorite place you've run in your life?
"I haven't run anywhere too cool. So just in general in Colorado, this summer when I went with Paddy [Grandinali], we ran at a lot of beautiful places there."
Â
7) If you could run anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
"I don't really have a place in particular, but somewhere that I could run through the woods, where there's a very smooth path. It's really cool to run through pine needle forests, so you probably don't have to go very far from here to find that."
Â
8) Did you have a running idol that you've looked up to during your career?
"No, not particularly. In the last few years I've really liked Robby Andrews. He was really successful in high school and really good in college. Then, he had a few off years, and he came back and is now one of the best U.S. middle distance runners, which I think is really cool. Or maybe someone like Ben Blankenship - I'm not necessarily a huge Blankenship fan, but he was an All-American in college and left the sport for a few years. He was a construction worker and came back on a whim and now he's also one of the best U.S. guys right now, so I think that idea of leaving and coming back is pretty cool."
Â
Team Superlatives
9) Funniest on the team?
"Well, all of the guys are obviously really funny. That's the best part about being on this team, but I feel like I might get berated at practice if I don't say Chernet [Sisay] is the funniest guy on the team. That's always been his biggest thing over the years so I'll throw a little plug in there, and say my boy Chewy's the funniest guy on the team."
Â
10) Most likely to succeed?
"Probably Alejandro [Juan Torres] just in terms of education. He's had a big adjusment here at High Point because he came here not speaking English, and he's really picked up on a lot since he's been here. He's had some fairly difficult classes that I've tried to help him with and he's always managed to figure it out well despite the language barrier he has."
Â
11) Most daring?
"Paddy. Not a whole lot of people realize that Paddy's a skateboarder which is kind of weird if you actually know him because he's one of the most uncoordinated kids ever, but he can seem to skateboard fairly well. He's always going out and going on adventures in the woods and camping out everywhere. He won't not do something just because it seems like it'll be difficult. Getting out to Colorado and coming home wasn't the easiest trip but it didn't stop either of us from doing it just because it would be hard."
Â
Pop Culture
12) What's your favorite TV show?
"I haven't seen it in a while, but I would probably say Breaking Bad. The team was super into it so I refused to watch it since everyone liked it so much. I'm weird like that. But then I finally gave it a chance and I watched like all of the seasons in like a month or two. It definitely didn't help my grades out, because I was watching a few episodes a day but it has definitely been my favorite show so far."
Â
13) Who is your favorite musical artist?
"I listen to a huge variety of different music but overall, Eminem has probably been my favorite over the years consistently. I also weirdly like Blink-182 which kind of stems from back when Reece [Ayers] was here and he introduced me to more punk music."
Â
14) What's your favorite movie?
"That's very dependent on what mood I'm in but I've always been a huge horror movie fan. Unfortunately, now horror movies aren't really scary they're just very gory and kind of gross. I was really excited when the Paranormal Activity movies came out though. The first one was pretty scary but they kind of ruined it as they went on."
Â
15) What's your favorite social media and why?
"I use social media but I'm not really a huge fan of it. I have Facebook and Twitter and Chewy for some reason created me an Instagram so if you ever go on and look at my Instagram it isn't created by me. It's only one picture but in the bio he said 'trying to go to medical school but I failed biochem.' I've never even taken biochem, but he was just trying to make fun of me. I'd probably say my favorite is Twitter because aside from following my friends, it's pretty good for breaking news etc."
Â
Miscellaneous
16) What do you do besides run in your free time?
"I like to do a lot of binge watching Netflix. I've been trying to do a decent amount of fishing which is weird because it was my first year bringing a fishing pole to HPU. I've tried to drag Paddy on a few fishing adventures but it hasn't quite panned out yet. I either like moving around a lot outside of not moving around at all, just staying inside watching movies."
Â
17) If you could have dinner at 1924 Prime with three people, living or dead, who would they be and why?
"It would have to have Chris Colo, the King of Steakhouse, because he's probably been to steakhouse more than anyone. I guess if I went for a runner I'd probably say Nick Willis. He runs for New Zealand. Not Chewy [laughs]. Maybe someone like Albert Einstein because it'd be interesting to actually talk to him about how he came up with all of his research, and inventions, and all of that good stuff."
Â
18) If Hollywood were to make a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?
"It'd probably be Matthew McConaughey because he's pretty hardcore and clearly I am as well. He's very popular with the ladies and obviously I am too - it's the eyes, and the hair."
Â
19) If you were stuck on a deserted island and had to choose one teammate to take with you, who would you choose?
"Well, it definitely would not be Chernet. I would spend most of my time taking care of him and making sure he's in his safe zone. It would probably be Paddy. Paddy spends enough time in the outdoors camping and all of that good stuff so he'd be able to cook us dinner and I would be able to make sure we don't get eaten or anything like that.
Â
20) What's the best advice you've ever received?
" It's probably from my mom. I mean, both of my parents, but definitely my mom because she always stressed that you can do whatever you want and to never worry about money issues or anything like that. No matter what, you can always make it work, and you always have to follow your heart, which has always been helpful."
