LIVE STATSLIVE VIDEOHIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women's soccer team continues its home weekend on Sunday, Aug. 23, when the team plays host to inter-triad rival UNCG in Vert Stadium at 7 p.m.
High Point is 0-5-0 all-time against UNCG, including a 3-0 loss in Greensboro last season.
The Panthers opened the 2015 season with a 0-0 draw against Georgia on Friday at home. Sophomore
Alex Persiani made six saves to record her first clean sheet of the season.
Persiani and the HPU defense combined to stymie a Georgia attack that put four goals on Furman in exhibition action. In addition to her six saves, the HPU keeper came off her line for several key interventions throughout the night. Senior center back
Amy Burch made a big play to keep the Bulldogs scoreless in the 97th minute when she cleared the ball off the line on a shot during a scrum in the penalty area. The full clean sheet is the first of Persiani's career after the sophomore was part of seven split shutouts as a freshman in 2014.
The draw against Georgia is High Point's first positive result in three games against an SEC opponent. The Panthers entered the night 0-2-0 against teams from the SEC with losses to Auburn and South Carolina.
UNCG enters Sunday's game with a 0-1-0 record after falling at home to Loyola-Chicago by a score of 3-2 in double-overtime on Friday. The Spartans twice tied the game after going down but lost on a goal in the 105th minute.
Candice Forbes led UNCG on the night with a goal and an assist and Zoe Fishman also found the back of the net for the Spartans.
UNCG went 9-8-3 overall and 5-3-1 in the SoCon last season, the first under head coach Michael Col. Chesney White was the catalyst for the Spartans success offensively, notching 37 points on 15 goals and seven assists. Chloe Buehler returns in net for UNCG after going 6-8-2 with a 1.44 goals-against average last season.
