The High Point University women's soccer team fell to No. 2-seed Liberty by a score of 4-1 in the semifinals of the 2013 Big South Women's Soccer Championship presented by Musco Lighting on Friday night in Conway, S.C. Redshirt-freshman Kelsey Perrell scored for the Panthers in the loss.

"This was a tough match tonight," head coach Marty Beall said. "Liberty was excellent in all facets of the game and at the end of the day I thought they did what they needed to do to get the result. Our team never quits and I am disappointed that it ended this way for our seniors."

Liberty scored twice in the first six minutes of the game to jump out to an early 2-0 lead over the Panthers. LU's first goal came on a header by Casey Norris in the fourth minute off a free kick into the box by Brittany Aanderud. Two minutes later, Swentik got behind the HPU defense on a long ball by Aanderud and beat May one-on-one to put the Flames up by two.

The Flames pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 61st minute when Dawn Elmers scored with a shot from the top of the HPU penalty area. Elmers wrestled control of a loose ball from HPU defense and hit a shot to the lower left corner with her first touch.

Perrell got a goal back for High Point in the 66th minute with her seventh goal of the season. Perrell beat the LU right back and took a shot from a tight angle on the left edge of the box. The ball sailed over Liberty keeper Van Noord and into the top right corner of the goal.

Liberty scored the final goal of the game in the 77th minute when Alanna Dunkle took advantage of a spilled ball by HPU keeper Jesse May and scored on her first touch. May beat Liberty's Erika Troutman to a through ball but could not control it. Dunkle hit a shot with her first touch and bent it inside the near post for the goal.

High Point was outshot in the game 25-18. The Panthers put 11 shots on frame including a team-high four by Perrell.

May made nine saves in the loss for High Point. The nine stops by May were the second most this season by the senior. Holly Van Noord also made nine saves in the game for Liberty.

HPU finishes the 2013 season with a 9-10-1 overall record. Liberty improves to 15-5-1 on the season and advances on to the Big South Championship on Sunday where the Flames will face top seed Radford.
