The High Point University volleyball team will finish up the regular season with a road trip to South Carolina to face Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina. The Panthers will play at CSU on Friday at 7 p.m. and at Coastal Carolina on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Panthers are 19-9 overall and 8-4 in league play heading in to the final weekend of the regular season. HPU is currently tied for third in the league with Coastal Carolina.
HPU swept Charleston Southern at the Millis Center on Sep. 29. Senior
Courtney Johnk posted a match-high 12 kills and senior
Jamie McDonald and sophomore
Kristin Heldt tallied 10 kills each. Sophomore
Chelsea Davis led the team with 17 digs and freshman
Annemarie Chin came up with 16 digs.
In the first meeting with Coastal Carolina this season, HPU went up 2-0 only to lose in five sets at the Millis Center. Davis led the Panthers with a career-high 24 digs and 12 kills. Johnk also put up 12 kills and McDonald added 11 kills. Freshman
Wavie Chin tallied 14 digs in the loss.
McDonald needs three block assists in the final two games to set tie the HPU single season record of 90 block assists. Sabrina Wahid had 90 in 2003. McDonald is also on pace to break the HPU single-season records for blocks per set. She is currently averaging 1.06 and would be the first Panther to average over a block per set in the Div. I era. The current record of 0.95 was set by Wahid in 2004.
Seeding for the Big South Conference Tournament will be decided after Saturday's matches. The tournament will be hosted by Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. beginning on Thursday, Nov. 15.
