Senior guard
Shay Shine scored 23 points to lead the High Point University men's basketball team to a 52-47 win over Winthrop on Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C. High Point took its first lead of the game with under two minutes remaining.
"Our kids really fought and battled tonight, we had some things go against us but they kept sticking with it," said HPU head coach
Scott Cherry. "In practice we have been emphasizing the little things like fighting for loose balls, taking charges and getting back on defense – those things help you win games and our guys did that tonight. It only takes one win to get things going in the right direction."
Shine went 8-for-16 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds in the win. Senior guard
Nick Barbour scored 14 points, hitting four three-pointers, and tied his career high with six rebounds. Redshirt-junior forward
Corey Law scored nine points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. After shooting under 50 percent from the free-throw line in its last game, High Point shot 82.4 percent (14-for-17) in the game.
Reggie Middleton led Winthrop with 15 points and Matt Morgan had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
High Point improved to 8-14 overall and 4-8 in the Big South, snapping a five-game losing streak. Winthrop fell to 9-14 overall and 6-6 in league play.
Winthrop led from the opening basket until the closing minutes, the Eagles leading by as many as 12 before High Point came back to tie it for the first time with 2:08 remaining in the game. Without a point guard on the floor, Shine took the ball up the court and laid it in to get High Point within three before Barbour hit a trey that made it 47-47 with 2:02 remaining. Shine drew a foul on HPU's next possession and drained both free throws, giving High Point its first lead at 49-47 with 1:10 left.
On the ensuing Eagle drive, Winthrop got two shots up and Shine came down with the second rebound, giving it to sophomore
Justin Cheek on an outlet. Cheek was able to draw a foul on the wing and hit two more freebees, making it 51-47. Shine hit another free throw with 23 seconds on the clock to make it a 52-47 final.
Winthrop didn't hit a field goal for the final 4:56 of the game and missed its last 10 shots from the floor.
Leading 30-22 at halftime, Winthrop came out came out scored the first four points of the second on a pair of free throws by Morgan and a jumper from Middleton. That prompted Cherry to call a timeout. High Point scored next when Law slammed home the rebound of a Shine jumper before Shine stole the ball and scored, making it 34-26 with 17:47 remaining. Scoring was hard to come by for the next six minutes, the only baskets a pair of free throws and a three-pointer by Barbour that made it 34-31.
Winthrop got its lead up to eight points multiple times in the last 10 minutes before the Panthers were able to close it up for good.
High Point University is back in action with a pair of home games next week. High Point hosts Presbyterian College on Thursday and Gardner-Webb on Saturday at the Millis Center.
