Box Score BOX SCORE

Freshman Chelsea Davis hit .500 with a match-high 12 kills to lead the High Point University volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-22) win over Charleston Southern Friday in Charleston S.C. The Panthers swept CSU to pick up their first Big South Conference win of the season.

“We came out focused and energetic and finally had a match where we put everything together,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “We had one stretch in the first set where we lost focus but otherwise we played very well against a good Charleston Southern team. We handled the ball, played defense and controlled our side of the net. That is how you win volleyball games.”

Davis had 12 kills, eight digs and three blocks as well as two service aces in the win. Junior Courtney Johnk had nine kills, four aces, four digs and two blocks and Kristin Heldt added eight kills. Freshman Caity Farus hit .455, putting down five kills without an error. Junior Molly Barlow stepped in to the starting libero role tonight and led the match with 12 digs. Lauren Bell had a match-high 33 assists.

High Point jumped out to an early lead in the first set, opening up an 11-point advantage at 21-10 on an ace by Johnk. The Lady Bucs battled back in the frame, coming within two points of HPU at 22-20. Johnk put down her fourth kill of the set to side out for the Panthers. Farus followed with a kill to bring up set point 24-20. Sydney Tracy had a kill to fight off set point for Charleston Southern. Heldt's third kill of the frame won it for HPU 25-21.

The Panthers led for all of the second set, winning 25-12. HPU hit .174 in the frame while holding CSU to a -.129 attack percentage. Johnk had three service aces and Chelsea Davis had two in the set.

Charleston Southern tried to pull off a comeback in the third set, leading 15-14 halfway through. Wynter Davis made an attack error for the Lady Bucs to knot the score at 15-15 and Johnk had a kill to give HPU the lead. The Panthers went on to win the final set 25-22. Chelsea Davis went off for seven kills in the final frame, hitting .600 with one error.

The Panthers (3-13, 1-1 Big South) will face Coastal Carolina Saturday at 2 p.m. in Conway, S.C.
