The High Point University volleyball battled Wake Forest Saturday in the championship game of the Black and Gold Challenge but fell to the ACC opponent 3-0 (20-25, 21-25, 14-25). Junior Molly Barlow had 11 digs and five aces in the loss and was named to the All-Tournament team along with freshman Kristin Heldt.

“Wake Forest had a great weekend,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “I was pleased with the energy the girls showed and how they implemented what we worked on in practice all week.”

Heldt had five kills in the match, following up an 11-kill performance in the win over Charlotte on Friday to earn All-Tournament honors. Junior Courtney Johnk had eight kills and seven digs in the loss and Chelsea Davis added six kills and seven digs.

After a quick 11-4 start for Wake Forest the Panthers battled back in the set, closing the lead to four at 23-19 but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 25-20 in the first set. HPU had two kills and six errors to allow the Deacs to pull out to an 11-4 lead. Johnk and Jamie McDonald combined on a block and McDonald put down her only kill of the frame to cut Wake's lead to 23-18 and Carlin Salmon made a hitting error that made it a four point Deacon lead. However, the Panthers' comeback fell short and HPU lost the set 25-20.

Barlow was fantastic from the service line in the second set, recording five aces, but it wasn't enough to hold off Wake Forest and the Panthers dropped the set 25-21. The Demon Deacons hit .483 in the set without making an attack error. Barlow served HPU to a 9-3 lead early with three aces in four points. The fourth point came on a kill by McDonald. WFU battled back, with the score tied 19-19 the Deacs went on a 6-2 run to finish the set. Johnk had five kills in the frame and Barlow came up with seven digs to go with her five aces.

Wake Forest took a 4-3 lead in set three on an attack error by Johnk and the Deacs held the lead for the duration of the match going on to win 25-14. Attack errors hurt HPU for the entire final set as the Panthers had just five kills with 13 errors.
