“This was a full team effort,” said head coach
Jason Oliver. “Every single person on the floor executed at their full potential in the same game for the first time this season. We played great defense, dug balls, blocked well and forced Charlotte to make mistakes. This is the kind of momentum we need to play an ACC opponent tomorrow.”
On Saturday, the Panthers will take on Wake Forest at 5 p.m.
Johnk hit .375 with 11 kills and three blocks while Heldt hit .381 with 11 kills and one solo block. Freshman
Chelsea Davis added six kills and nine digs and junior
Lauren Bell dished out 31 assists with three digs and one block.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in to the break, winning the first set 25-19 and holding on for a 25-22 win in the second. While Charlotte made 14 attacking errors in the first two sets the Panthers limited their hitting errors to eight to outhit the 49ers .262 to .092.
HPU jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set. Johnk had two kills in the run, Davis added a point and the 49ers made three attacking errors. The Panthers led by as much as eight in the set, 20-12, on a Charlotte service error. Johnk hit .571 with five kills in the first set.
HPU led 23-18 in the second frame but the 49ers battled back to within two points at 24-22. Johnk put down her seventh kill of the match to win the set for the Panthers. Davis and Heldt each had three kills in the set and Johnk and
Jamie McDonald added two each.
In the third set Heldt hit .833 with five kills on six swings without committing an error to lead the Panthers to a 25-19 win. Davis went to the service line with a 7-5 lead and served HPU to a 11-5 lead. Heldt had a kill, followed by three straight errors by the 49ers after which Heldt scored another point for the Panthers. Heldt also put down a kill for the final point of the match.
McDonald finished the match with three kills and three blocks and
Molly Barlow had 10 digs on the day.
