The High Point University volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Elon Tuesday at the Millis Center despite a solid defensive showing from senior Breanna Holliday and junior Molly Barlow. The two combined for 26 digs in the 3-0 (22-25, 18-25, 16-25) loss.

“Elon made fewer errors than us tonight,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “I thought our defense played well and kept us in the match we just weren't able to transition that in to points.”

Holliday finished the match with 18 digs and Barlow added eight. Neither made a reception error in the match. Junior Courtney Johnk was the team's kills leader with nine on the night and Michelle Chakirelis and Jamie McDonald added five each from the middle blocker positions.

Neither team had any offensive rhythm in the first set but Elon pulled out a 25-22 win, outhitting the Panthers .093 to .024. Chakirelis had a kill to pull HPU within one point of the Phoenix at 21-22 but Elon was able to side out and win the set 25-22.

Elon's attack got better with every set as the Phoenix hit .237 in the second set and .314 in the final set to beat HPU 3-0.

Chakirelis added two solo blocks to her five kills in the match and Lauren Bell dished out 16 assists.

High Point hits the road this weekend for the Black and Gold Challenge hosted by Wake Forest. The Panthers will face Charlotte at 4 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.
