Junior guard Nick Barbour hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds left to lift the High Point University men's basketball team to a 70-69 double overtime win over Winthrop on Tuesday night in front of a crowd of 1,614 at the Millis Center. Barbour led the Panthers with 22 points and junior Shay Shine added 19.

"This was a huge win for us in front of a great crowd tonight," said HPU head coach Scott Cherry. "We had so many guys step up, with David Campbell getting that putback, Nick's shot, Shay scoring in overtime. We played a great first half to hold them to 13 points but they're a good team. We knew they would make a run. I'm just happy for my guys that we made the plays to get this win."

High Point improved to 11-15 overall and 7-9 in the Big South while Winthrop dropped to 12-14 overall and 8-8 in Big South play.

Senior Tehran Cox scored nine points and freshman forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell led HPU with eight rebounds. David Campbell tied a season-high with six rebounds, four of which came on the offensive end.

Reggie Middleton scored 21 points after going scoreless in the first half to lead Winthrop. Charles Corbin scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Eagles.

The Panthers forced 11 turnovers and held Winthrop under 30 percent shooting in the first half, but the Eagles came back and held the Panthers to just three field goals in the second and forced OT.

In the first overtime, the Panthers found themselves down 61-59 with 20 seconds left. HPU turned to Shine, who drove the lane and made a reverse layup to tie the game at (61-61). High Point forced double overtime with a defensive stop.

Winthrop jumped out to a quick 65-61 lead in the second overtime. Shine responded for HPU with a deep two-pointer and a layup to tie the game, 65-65, with 2:44 left. Maxwell hit a free throw and Campbell made a great play to get an offensive board and lay it in, putting HPU up, 68-65. Middleton hit two free throws, then knocked down a jumper with 11 seconds left to put Winthrop ahead. Barbour came through with 2.2 seconds to go, attacking the lane to hit the game-winning floater.

Playing in front of a “blackout” crowd, HPU came out strong on the defensive end. Shine drew a charge on the game's first possession and the Panthers held Winthrop to only one field-goal until the 8:25 mark of the first half, while earning a 11-3 advantage. HPU ended the half strong, on a 9-0 run, started by a Cox three-pointer which gave the Panthers a 27-13 lead going into halftime. The 13 points was the lowest opponent point total given up by High Point this season.

Winthrop answered quickly at the start of the second half and cut HPU's lead to 31-26 with 14:59 left in the second half. The Eagles took their first lead of the game on a Justin Burton three-pointer to make it 45-43 with 4:08 left. With the game knotted at 47, Cox was fouled and knocked down both free throws to give HPU a two-point lead with 1:05 left in regulation. Middleton made two free-throws with 15.9 seconds in regulation to send the game into overtime. HPU was able to continue despite shooting only 13.6 percent in the second half.

It was HPU's first double-overtime game since a 92-87 loss to Radford on Feb. 23, 2005. It was HPU's second overtime game this season, as the Panthers beat Presbyterian, 64-60, in OT on Jan. 20.

The Panthers are back in action when they host Appalachian State on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Millis Center. It is part of the ESPNU BracketBusters series and also will be Senior Night.
