The High Point University men's basketball team played its second overtime game in a row and senior Nick Barbour scored 10 of his 20 points in OT to lead the Panthers to an 80-72 win over the Citadel on Saturday night at the Millis Center. Sophomore Xavier Martin scored a career-high 21 points to lead all players.

"We had guys make plays down the stretch and got a good win with a good crowd tonight," said HPU head coach Scott Cherry. "Nick Barbour came up big with 10 points in overtime, Corey Law came up big with another double-double, Xavier Martin came up big. Travis Elliott was great defensively, he only got two points but he had 10 rebounds. Now we have to turn around and get ready to play a good Hampton team on the road on Tuesday."

High Point improved to 2-3 with the win while the Citadel dropped to 2-3.

Behind Martin's 21 points and Barbour's 20, Law scored 13 points and tied his career high with 15 rebounds, his second double-double of the season. Martin's 21 points crushed his previous career high of 15 and Elliott grabbed 10 boards, topping his previous high of nine.

The Citadel's Mike Groselle notched his fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds, both team highs. Lawrence Miller scored 14, Ashton Moore scored 12 and Marshall Harris III scored 10 for the Bulldogs.

High Point led by 10 points early in the second half and held a 56-51 lead with under two minutes to go before a late surge by the Citadel. A free throw by Jairus Simms made it 62-57 before Moore and Miller hit consecutive three-pointers to put the Citadel up, 63-62.

In the final minute of regulation, Simms tipped in his own miss and Law hit a free throw to put HPU up, 65-63. The Citadel called timeout with six seconds left and Harris hit a jumper in the lane to force overtime.

Each team hit one of two free throws to start overtime before a three-point play by Martin put High Point ahead for good. Martin grabbed a bouncing rebound and laid it in, drawing the foul. The Citadel's Miller hit a jumper just inside the three-point line to make it 69-68, and that was the closest the Bulldogs would get in OT. High Point scored the next nine points – eight by Barbour – to seal the victory.

The Panthers hit the first two baskets of the game, a layup by Law and a floater from Simms. The teams went neck-and-neck in the early going, with the score tied at 10-10, 12-12 and 14-14, before an 8-0 run by the Panthers put HPU up for the rest of the half. Barbour hit two free throws and a trey and Martin followed with a three to put HPU up, 22-14, and High Point led 32-28 at halftime.

High Point outrebounded the Citadel, 46-40, and held the Bulldogs under 40 percent from the floor in the win.

The Panthers have a pair of road games next week. HPU takes on Hampton on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and travels to Campbell for a Saturday 1 p.m. matchup. A charter member of the Big South Conference, Campbell left to join the Atlantic Sun from 1994-2011 before rejoining the Big South this season. It will be High Point and Campbell's first meeting since Dec. 28, 2002, a 79-76 HPU victory.
