The High Point University volleyball season ended Thursday with a loss to Radford in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Tournament. Freshman
Caity Farus led HPU with nine kills in the 3-0 (15-25, 23-25, 18-25) loss.
“Radford deserved to win,” said head coach
Jason Oliver. “They came out on fire and played their style of volleyball. We struggled all night and just couldn't get good touches on the ball. Volleyball is all about consistency and we have struggled with that all year.”
Farus hit .381 with four blocks while classmate
Chelsea Davis posted five kills, 14 digs and two blocks. Junior
Molly Barlow came up with 11 digs.
HPU finished the season 9-21 (6-8 Big South) while Radford improves to 14-17 and advances to face Winthrop in the semifinals. This marks this first time in three meetings the Highlanders have beat HPU in the conference tournament.
HPU struggled on attack in the first set, hitting negative in the frame with eight kills and 10 errors. The Highlanders were able to capitalize on the mistakes, jumping out to a 21-11 lead. Radford made just three attack errors in the set, rolling to a 25-15 win.
The second set was much closer, with HPU knotting the score 22-22 but the Panthers could not take the lead, falling 23-25. An attack error by RU's Emma Deininger tied the match but Barlow's serve went in to the net to give Radford back the lead. Carly Fleming put down a kill to give the Highlanders set point, 24-22. Farus kept HPU alive with a kill by Fleming answered with another kill to win the match for Radford 25-23.
Radford completed the sweep with a 25-18 win in the third set. The Highlanders outhit High Point .233 to .043 in the final frame led by Rachel Wiechecki with seven kills.
