The High Point University volleyball team took a 3-0 (24-26, 19-25, 19-25) loss at UNC Asheville Saturday at the Justice Center. Freshman
Kristin Heldt was the team's leading attacker for the second straight match, tallying nine kills.
Junior
Courtney Johnk also put up nine kills along with seven digs and two blocks. Sophomore
Michelle Chakirelis hit .357 with seven kills and three blocks in the loss.
Asheville held an early lead in the first set until
Marin Seifert came off the bench and served HPU back in the frame. High Point tied the set 18-18 with three straight points while Seifert was serving, including an ace. The Panthers held the lead to a 24-22 set point, forcing an Asheville timeout. The Bulldogs tied the match with kills from Meredith Foster and Cindi Miller. Johnk's attack was blocked by Holly Shelton and Anna Moore and Moore put down the final kill to complete Asheville's come back and give the Bulldogs a 26-24 win.
HPU never regained momentum in the second set, falling 25-19. The Bulldogs led by as much as six in the set but HPU closed it to a three-point lead on a kill by Heldt at 13-16. Asheville sided out on a kill by Shelton and went on to win the set on an 8-3 run.
Chelsea Blanford provided a spark off the bench in the third set, putting down a kill to give HPU the 10-9 lead. She went back to the service line and kept Asheville off balance, allowing High Point to take a 14-10 lead. Eventually the Bulldogs rallied back, taking a 17-15 lead. Asheville held off the Panthers for the rest of the set, pulling off a 25-19 win.
High Point wraps up the five-game road trip with a pair of matches at Radford and Liberty next weekend. HPU will take on the Highlanders Friday at 7 p.m. and the Flames Saturday at 2 p.m. in Big South action.
